CrossFit Mt. Pleasant Offers After-School Program for Children

Childhood obesity is higher than ever – more than doubling in children in the last 30 years. The numbers are just as sobering in South Carolina with more than 15% of children and teens classified as overweight. Curbing this epidemic requires teaching children about healthy eating and promoting physical activity.

Beginning Aug. 21, CrossFit Mt. Pleasant will offer an after-school program for children that will do just that. Children will participate in structured workouts and games, helping them see physical activity as fun and enjoyable. Children also will have time for free play and to complete their homework.

Classes are be taught by Tina Whetzel, CrossFit Mt. Pleasant Owner, CrossFit Level 1 and CrossFit Kids Certified Trainer, along with Clint Fisher, who also has his CrossFit Level 1 and Endurance certificates. CrossFit Mt. Pleasant is located at 3400 Turgot Lane within the Park West subdivision on Highway 17 North.

“It’s sad to children struggling with their weight and the resulting health complications like diabetes and high blood pressure,” Whetzel said. “We want to show children how to enjoy exercise and healthy eating and create long-lasting good habits.”

The program for kindergarten through fifth grades is from 3- 5 p.m. Monday throughFriday and 4-5:30 p.m. for children in grades sixth through eighth. Children must be picked up by 5:30 p.m. (there are fees for late pickup). The program is open to any child but busing only will be available from the following schools to CrossFit Mt. Pleasant: Laurel Hill Elementary, Pinckney Elementary, Jennie Moore Elementary, Laing Middle School.
