I would like to present an interesting fact I learned today regarding the overcrowding situation at our schools.
As many of you know schools in the overcrowded areas of Charleston County School District house trailers for students to learn. While inside these trailers the students are considered safe. Due to unfortunate events over the past years we have been forced to practice "lock down" drills with our students so they know what to do in an emergency situation at school...most specifically an unsafe person with or with out a weapon is on the school campus. The students hide out in different areas of their classroom or school to stay out of harms way.
Not all of these trailers...particularly those of older grades (3rd & up) have restrooms. In these cases the children, unaccompanied by an adult, go into the main school building to use the restroom. This happens all day long.
If the school goes into lock down while a student is between their class and bathroom not only will they be locked out of all the classrooms, they may be LOCKED OUT OF THE SCHOOL. In this case they are to run to their safety. Yes, that's right run to their safety. Personally I do not like that at all.
I am not trying to be an alarmist I am merely presenting facts that most parents are unaware of. I didn't know until today. Others will say it will never happen here, and I pray to God that it never does. I just rather have all the children inside a building under some type of adult supervision not walking unattended because they had to use the restroom.
I would love to hear from someone at CCSD to tell my how this is safe for ALL students. I never will.
