Here are the top four stories today in Myrtle Beach:

  1. During a standoff with police that lasted most of Saturday, a wanted man barricaded himself inside a Carolina Forest home that then caught fire Saturday night. The man was found dead inside the home shortly after midnight on Sunday. Two nearby buildings were also damaged by fire. While the standoff was in progress, multiple shots were fired by the subject, and some South Carolina Law Enforcement Division equipment was destroyed. Law enforcement thanked the community for their patience as some had been unable to go to their homes, while others helped out the officers and first responders with food, water and access to neighboring homes. The deceased man's name has not yet been released. (WBTW)
  2. Former President Donald Trump was in Florence on Saturday for one of his rallies. It was his first visit to the state since 2020. Here are a couple articles summarizing the rally highlights, and a fact-checker report from News13. (WPDE) (WMBF) (WBTW)
  3. Thousands of Horry County landowners who were incorrectly charged too much for stormwater fees will be getting refunds. Councilman Johnny Vaught said the miscalculated bills were a mistake, and most of the refunds will be small. The county is working on a system for returning the money to land-owning taxpayers. An error was made when the county increased the stormwater fee rate on approximately 22,000 parcels of land within the county. Refunds should begin being issued by the end of April. (MyHorryNews.com)
  4. A Coastal Carolina University track and field star outran everyone else in the women's 60-meter dash, and won gold and championship status. Melissa Jefferson is now NCAA National Champion, and she is the first-ever individual national champion in CCU history! That also makes Jefferson a 2022 first-team All-American. Congratulations, Melissa! (WMBF)

From my notebook:

  • News13's Pet of the Weekend is Bailey, a 4-year-old, 95-pound, mixed-breed dog available for adoption from Grand Strand Humane Society. Bailey's owner died recently, and a family who had taken her in was not able to care for her. Bailey is a gentle dog, house-trained, rarely barks, and loves car rides. She also gets along well with other dogs. (WBTW)
  • Surfside Beach police K9 Biko (retired) has died. The announcement was made by SSPD through the dog's handler, former Sgt. Julian Ziolkowski. Biko was with the department's K9 unit for five years, and retired after getting injured while on duty. (WPDE)
  • Touchdown! A Myrtle Beach police officer had a little fun with some kids near Market Common while on patrol over the weekend. PFC Lyla Odell played a round of football with four boys. Some pics of the brief game were posted on social media, with most commenters saying it was a great way to show a positive connection between police and children, and they were glad Officer Odell got a moment or two to enjoy herself. (WPDE)
  • House hunters: here are five new Myrtle Beach area listings for sale, courtesy of Patch and Redfin. (Myrtle Beach Patch)
  • Hold onto your... trampoline?! A Surfside Beach resident did a double-take after going outside early in the morning during Saturday's windstorm and seeing two trampolines in their yard. Another family's trampoline became airborne from the high winds, went over a fence, and landed in the other neighbor's yard — right beside their own trampoline! With video to prove it! (WBTW)

Kathy Mandell

About me: The best decision I ever made was relocating to the Myrtle Beach area from New England a few years ago, with my three dogs and three cats. I enjoy dogs, cats, road trips, photography, writing, vegetarian food, live music, bicycling and above all my daily walks on the beaches in and around the Grand Strand.
