Here are the top five stories in Myrtle Beach today:

  1. One person was hurt and brought to the hospital after their boat was apparently struck by lightning in North Myrtle Beach on Saturday morning. Horry County Fire Rescue's Boat crews and NMB Rescue Squad responded to the distress call that came in around 9 a.m. from the area of the North Jetty. South Carolina Department of Natural Resources also responded. There is no word on the person's condition at this time. (wpde.com)
  2. An officer-involved shooting occurred in Georgetown on Saturday, but details are slim as of the time of this posting. South Carolina Law Enforcement Division is investigating and will release additional details. The Georgetown Police Department reported the shooting to SLED on Saturday. There is no threat to the community. (WMBF)
  3. Georgetown County solicitor Jimmy Richardson announced on Friday that the hearing for Brittanee Drexel's accused killer, Raymond Moody, has been delayed. Richardson said he has received additional information from the FBI regarding Drexel's death in the form of a terabyte external hard drive filled with data about the case. It will take a while to piece through all the information on that hard drive, and the information must be shared with Moody's legal counsel. The hearing will most likely occur in October. (wpde.com)
  4. On Friday night, Horry County Fire Rescue's latest group of recruits graduated. It was the second-largest recruit class in South Carolina's history. Fifty-two recruits graduated Friday, coming close to the all-time record held by HCFR for April's class of 58 graduates. A spokesperson said the large classes are trending, as Horry County itself grows in leaps and bounds. Public safety has to grow along with the population, and that's exactly what's happening. Congratulations and thank you to all the graduates! (WBTW)
  5. An Horry County grandfather and his granddaughter were found safe and reunited with family after they went missing temporarily over the weekend. A good Samaritan couple saw a Facebook post about the pair and recognized them, which eventually led to their being reunited with family. (WMBF)

From my notebook:

  • Today is the final day of the Pick Me! SC free adoption campaign statewide at all South Carolina animal shelters. Even when fees are applicable, adoption fees here on the Grand Strand are pretty reasonable as compared to those in other parts of the country. Adoption fees generally include spaying or neutering of the animal, micro-chip, vaccines, worming, rabies vaccination, heartworm tests for dogs and feline leukemia and FIV testing for cats. That's a lot! Here are the adoptable pets around the area that are in need of a home. (Myrtle Beach Patch)
  • News13's Pet of the Weekend is Alshon, a 7-year-old yellow Labrador retriever available from Grand Strand Humane Society. Alshon came to the shelter as a stray a couple months ago. He has a ton of energy, as most Labs do. He loves other dogs, people and car rides! (WBTW)
  • Last week we mentioned two local boys who raised money selling lemonade and cookies for the Myrtle Beach Fire Department's rescue team. This weekend, the kids presented the department with a check for $435! Way to go! The MBFD will use the money to buy ocean rescue equipment. (wpde.com)

You're officially in the loop for Sunday, everyone! I'll see you bright and early Monday morning for another edition of the Myrtle Beach Daily.

Kathy Mandell

About me: The best decision I ever made was relocating to the Myrtle Beach area from New England a few years ago, with my three dogs and three cats. I enjoy dogs, cats, road trips, photography, writing, vegetarian food, live music, bicycling and above all my daily walks on the beaches in and around the Grand Strand.
