Here are the top stories in Myrtle Beach today:
- Horry County Fire Rescue spent most of Tuesday dousing a ten-acre fire near the intersection of Highway 31 and Robert Edge Parkway in Little River. There were no structures damaged or people injured. (WPDE) The South Carolina Forestry Commission assisted by delivering bulldozers to the scene to plow a firebreak around the blaze. The fire is off Highway 90 in a wooded area that abuts a land-clearing project for the Barefoot Church. North Myrtle Beach residents saw and smelled smoke for most of Tuesday. The fire began in a smaller, 3-acre section late-morning, but spread to 10 acres by the afternoon. (WBTW)
- They're baaaack! King Tides return to the Grand Strand for most of next week. King Tides are expected to hit the coastline December 4th and 5th with the ultra-high tides continuing through December 7th. The City of North Myrtle Beach is particularly concerned about the city's flood-prone areas — specifically flooding of roads or properties in the low-lying sections of town. Tides may be as high as 7 feet by the weekend. (WBTW)
- An arrest has been made after multiple shots were fired near a home in Surfside Beach on Monday morning. Surfside Police say they arrested a 27-year-old man and charged him with discharging a firearm, breach of peace, and possession of marijuana. There were no injuries, and no property was damaged. The incident happened near 6th Avenue South and South Cedar Drive. Three or four shots were fired, according to witnesses. The suspect said he was protecting his home. He is being held at Long Detention Center. (WMBF)
- Famed KingOne Properties International is building a luxury commercial facility about a mile away from North Myrtle Beach City Hall. The company bought about an acre of land on 9th Avenue South, and plans to turn a 14,000 square foot area into a facility called Lake View Commons. Owner Michael King calls his commercial real estate style "South Florida flair," and hopes the luxury property will bring a new look to NMB. The complex will include physician's offices, financial advisors, and a restaurant. (WMBF)
- The Inspection Support Network has released a report showing that Myrtle Beach is outpacing the rest of the nation in new home construction, and has been doing so since the year 2000. The median age of homes in Myrtle Beach is around 23 years, dating most properties here as being built at the start of the 21st century. The article also shows that most of the people "transplanting" here (me included!) are near retirement age. Myrtle Beach is second, after Provo, Utah, in new home growth nationally. About me: The best decision I ever made was relocating to the Myrtle Beach area from New England a few years ago, with my three dogs and three cats. I enjoy dogs, cats, road trips, photography, writing, vegetarian food, live music, bicycling and above all my daily walks on the beaches in and around the Grand Strand.
