Here are the top five stories today in Myrtle Beach:

  1. A Maryland family will get $20.7 million in a wrongful death lawsuit for the 2018 Myrtle Beach drowning of Zurihun Wolde who became caught in a rip current with his four children. The lawsuit was filed against the City of Myrtle Beach and Lack's Beach Services, as well as "John Doe Lifeguard." The lawsuit accused the defendants of focusing their energy on renting beach equipment instead of safety. According to the lawsuit, no lifeguards responded to Wolde's cries for help and the defendants never notified beachgoers of a high rip current alert on the day of the drowning. (WCBD News 2)
  2. Tonight, Georgetown County Sheriff's Office, Conway PD and Florence County Sheriff's Office are participating in National Night Out beginning around 6 p.m. in each of the locations. National Night Out is an annual campaign that promotes police-community partnerships and camaraderie between residents and law enforcement to make communities safer and more caring. The events are free. Locations and times are listed in the ABC15 article. (wpde.com)
  3. Another Starbucks could be coming to Myrtle Beach soon, as well as a new Mexican restaurant called Cinco de Mayo Fiesta. The two proposals are being reviewed by the Myrtle Beach Community Appearance Board this week. Cinco de Mayo Fiesta, if approved, would be located at 1104 3rd Avenue South. The new Starbucks would be at 1946 10th Avenue North in the Sam's Club parking lot. (wpde.com)
  4. Tickets are available now for Brookgreen Gardens' Nights of a Thousand Candles, the holiday light display that brings thousands of visitors to the South Strand each year between Thanksgiving and New Year's Day. If you've never been to Nights of a Thousand Candles, it is definitely something worth making a point to see. Not only are the lights in the trees and around the gardens sensational, but there is also live music, food and beverages, and holiday-themed art exhibits. It's a great evening out to celebrate the holidays. (Holy City Sinner)
  5. The Myrtle Beach Area Chamber of Commerce has announced that the Ignite Women's Conference, presented by Tidelands Health, will be happening at the Myrtle Beach Convention Center on Thursday, October 13. The first-ever conference has a mission to empower and support women in the community by having the opportunity to connect and exchange ideas. There will be speakers, presenters and breakaway workshops throughout the day. (Myrtle Beach Patch)

Myrtle Beach pic of the day:

Tuesday's photo was sent in by Myrtle Beach resident Kim Palmer who snapped this view overlooking the new "Hangout" and the aquarium at Broadway At The Beach — with a storm brewing in the sky. Great photo, Kim!

From my notebook:

  • Kind Keeper No-Kill Animal Rescue has something special for the month of August: half-off adoption fees for the twelve animals shown in this Facebook post. These dogs and cats have been with Kind Keeper for an extended period of time and desperately need homes. Each pet is special in their own way. Fees are $165 for the dogs shown here and $65 for the cats shown here. Contact Kind Keeper at (843) 427-4388 to meet your new furry family member! (Kind Keeper No-Kill Animal Rescue via Facebook)
  • National Black Cat Appreciation Day is coming up on August 17. Did you know black cats and dogs are often overlooked by potential adopters in favor of other pets? It's true and the issue actually has a name: Black Cat Syndrome (or Black Dog Syndrome). I spotted this article in Hadwin-White Subaru's recent newsletter. Seven reasons to adopt a black cat. (Hadwin White Subaru)
  • Businesses are still hiring even though summer is quickly heading towards the rearview mirror! Check out the latest job openings in the Myrtle Beach area courtesy of Patch and ZipRecruiter. (Myrtle Beach Patch)
  • Visit Myrtle Beach, South Carolina has partnered with Graco for a sweepstakes! Enter for your chance to win a four-night stay for up to two adults and two children at The Beach plus a Graco Modes Adventure Stroller Wagon. (Visit Myrtle Beach, South Carolina via Facebook)
  • One of my favorite places (and I don't go there often enough) is Myrtle Beach Pinball Museum. The nonprofit "museum" is actually a small building on 27th Avenue North where for $12 you can play pinball on a collection of classic machines for an hour. The best part: all the money goes to charities for children such as Make-A-Wish Foundation and St. Jude's Children's Hospital. The pinball museum is open during limited hours, so be sure to check with the museum before going. (wpde.com)

That's it for Tuesday, folks! See you all Wednesday for your next Grand Strand update.

About me: The best decision I ever made was relocating to the Myrtle Beach area from New England a few years ago, with my three dogs and three cats. I enjoy dogs, cats, road trips, photography, writing, vegetarian food, live music, bicycling and above all my daily walks on the beaches in and around the Grand Strand.
