Here are the top four stories today in Myrtle Beach:
- Investigators working on that deadly Sunday morning shooting moved quickly to identify the people involved, and had them in custody in less than a day. Police were just around the corner when the shooting occurred, and were on the scene immediately. Of the four suspects, one juvenile is still wanted by police, while the other three people (including another juvenile) are in custody. One adult was charged with murder and three counts of assault and battery of a high and aggravated nature. The other adult was charged as an accessory after the fact. Bond was set for one suspect. 17-year-old DyQuayvon "Quay" Dickens, a South Florence High School multi-sport athlete, was killed in the shooting. (wpde.com)
- Renting or buying a home is getting more and more expensive, and less than half of millenials now own their own home, according to the latest Census report and statistics compiled by Apartmentlist.com. Rents in Myrtle Beach are up 35% compared to when the pandemic began in early 2020, and up 25% over a year ago. Millennials who say they will continue renting give affordability as their main reason. The generation is behind previous generations in terms of homeownership by age 40. (wpde.com)
- What's the most popular signage you see when driving along Highway 17 on the Grand Strand? "NOW HIRING"! Here are the latest new job listings in the Myrtle Beach area. (Myrtle Beach Patch)
- The trial of two Horry County deputies who were fired after two women in their care drowned in a van during Hurricane Florence has been set. The trial is set to begin in May, with jury selection happening on May 16. It is not decided whether the pair will be tried separately, or together. The trial was originally scheduled in 2021, and then again in February of this year, but was postponed both times. (WBTW)

- An event that was announced recently has been postponed until September. The eMYRge Techstars Startup Weekend was originally scheduled to happen May 6, 7 and 8 at HTC Aspire Hub. The folks at Visit Myrtle Beach sent around a bulletin announcing that the event is postponed until September. (TechStars.com)
- The 30th annual Spring Tide Clean-up is happening this weekend in Murrells Inlet. The day begins at 10 a.m. at Morse Landing with a brief ceremony, and then the clean-up begins. There will be a chowder cookoff, barbecue, and live music afterwards. (wpde.com)
- The Long Bay Symphony and Violins of Hope performed at Myrtle Beach High School last weekend. Grand Strand musicians had the rare chance to play restored violins more than a century old. The instruments were once played by Jewish musicians from Bulgaria who were victims or survivors of the Holocaust. A survivor, who was 9 years old when he was sent to a concentration camp, shared his story. (WMBF)
- The Myrtle Beach Shorebirds Quilts of Valor Group honored four more veterans with quilts of valor last weekend at a fundraiser. The ceremony was a milestone for the National Quilts of Valor Foundation, because one of the quilts was the 300,000th quilt presented by the group. The event was held at The Veterans Café and Grille. About me: The best decision I ever made was relocating to the Myrtle Beach area from New England a few years ago, with my three dogs and three cats. I enjoy dogs, cats, road trips, photography, writing, vegetarian food, live music, bicycling and above all my daily walks on the beaches in and around the Grand Strand.
