Here are the top five stories in Myrtle Beach today:
- The FBI has arrested Bhagavan "Doc" Antle of Tiger King fame. Antle was booked into J. Reuben Long Detention Center late Friday. No information on the exact charges or why he was arrested were released publicly as of the time of this posting. Antle owns Myrtle Beach Safari and has been the subject of a number of high-profile accusations and allegations in the last two years or so. He became somewhat famous after appearing in the Tiger King documentary on Netflix. (WBTW)
- The Horry County Planning Commission has recommended that Horry County Council approve 254 new homes and 184 new townhomes in Little River. Residents and others are concerned that the small town is already experiencing too much growth, citing the traffic problems that come along with expansion. Six months ago the commission recommended that the same proposal not be approved by County Council. Even though the planning commission has unanimously rubber-stamped the proposal, it still needs to be approved by Horry County Council in three readings of the ordinance. (wpde.com)
- Residents in the Belle Harbor neighborhood in Myrtle Beach are on high alert after a man was seen breaking into a home thanks to a Ring doorbell cam. Belle Harbor consists of all new-build homes. Each home purchased included a Ring doorbell camera, as well as smart locks that can be operated by smartphone. There was an earlier break-in when the homes were under construction last year. Some appliances were stolen. This week's break-in didn't result in any stolen items, but the homeowner said the person "just walked in," was in the house for about a half-hour and had disabled the Ring devices. MBPD is asking anyone with info to call the department at (843) 918-1382. (WMBF)
- After a rough four years, the North Myrtle Beach High School class of 2022 proudly closed a chapter to start their next. The graduation ceremony was held at Myrtle Beach Convention Center Thursday. In the last four years, students in the Class of 2022 faced Hurricane Florence and the pandemic's roller-coaster ride of virtual and in-person classes, along with normal challenges most high schoolers face. Congrats to all the graduates! (WMBF)
- Remember the good old days when you could get a dog for free? Grand Strand Humane Society is hosting a free dog adoption event all weekend at Bill M. Wingard Puppy Playground, located at the corner of Mr. Joe White Ave and 21st Avenue North in Myrtle Beach. The no-kill shelter is in dire need of re-homing 50 dogs in its care because they are out of room. We need to help spread the word — adoption fees are waived for all dogs adopted at the event this weekend. It's happening today and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. (wpde.com) Shelters all across the United States are facing the same problems, due in large part to "pandemic puppies." These are dogs that were adopted during the pandemic and then surrendered to shelters and rescues when their humans returned to work. Fostering is another way folks can help shoulder some of the burden. (Fox News)

About me: The best decision I ever made was relocating to the Myrtle Beach area from New England a few years ago, with my three dogs and three cats. I enjoy dogs, cats, road trips, photography, writing, vegetarian food, live music, bicycling and above all my daily walks on the beaches in and around the Grand Strand.
