Highway 707 Fire + Humane Society's New Home + Sidewalks Wanted

Welcome to the Myrtle Beach Daily, your go-to for the latest on everything going down in town.

Happy Sunday, people of the Grand Strand! Here's everything you need to know around Myrtle Beach today.

A glance at Sunday's weather: Humid and partly cloudy throughout the day. High: 89 Low: 73.

Here are the top stories today in Myrtle Beach:

  1. Horry County fire crews responded to 2-alarm fire at a house on Highway 707 in Socastee on Sunday. The crew blocked the highway for an extended time period. There were no injuries reported, and investigators are still working to determine the cause of the blaze. (WBTW)
  2. Grand Strand Humane Society has finally located a temporary shelter location. It will be temporarily working at 4635 Factory Stores Boulevard, Suite N210, across from Carolina Pottery near the Tanger Outlets on Highway 501. The temporary lease ends October 31. Officials hope to have the pest problems at the original location solved by then in order to move back to 3241 Mr. Joe White Avenue. The organization is in need of donations to help feed and care for the animals. (MyHorryNews.com)
  3. Funplex Myrtle Beach is revealing a record-setting ride that takes pairs of riders on a 50-foot altitude flying jet ride. It's the first of its kind in North America, and the tallest. The new experience is called Mach Fun, and guests can control certain features, making it an interactive experience. The unique amusement park has some other rides that are equally thrilling as well. (wpde.com)
  4. Myrtle Beach area funeral homes and crematories have seen an increase in COVID-19 deaths over the last few weeks. According to Robert Borning, a funeral director at McMillan-Small Funeral Home and Crematory in Myrtle Beach, a sudden spike in deaths, with a younger age base, has been happening recently. Many families are requiring masks at funeral services and mentioning this in obituaries, he said, in lieu of the City having a mask mandate. (WBTW)
  5. Residents of the Burgess Community would like to see sidewalks installed along Holmestown Road. Funding from the American Rescue Plan may be a possible way to make it happen. The community drafted a letter to Horry County leaders making the request, citing dangers when walking and bicycling on or near the busy road. Costs for the project could top $6 million, or higher due to recent rises in construction costs. (WMBF)

About me: The best decision I ever made was relocating to the Myrtle Beach area from New England a few years ago, with my three dogs and three cats. I enjoy dogs, cats, road trips, photography, writing, vegetarian food, live music, bicycling and above all my daily walks on the beaches in and around the Grand Strand.
