All-Clear At CCU+Ida Volunteers Head To NOLA+Flounder Overload

Here's a five-minute guide to the most important things happening around town today.

(Patch Media)

Welcome back, Myrtle Beach! Let's get you all caught up to start this Wednesday, September 1st off on an informed note. These are the most important things going on around the Grand Strand today.

A quick look at the weather: Rainy and humid. High: 85 Low: 73.

Here are the top stories in Myrtle Beach today:

  1. Tuesday morning there was a bomb threat near Coastal Carolina University at the Circle K near the campus at Founders Drive and Highway 544. The university had sent out an alert early in the morning, telling students to shelter in place. Police gave the "all clear" about two hours later. Highway 544 near Myrtle Ridge Drive was closed temporarily as a precaution. (WBTW)
  2. Red Cross volunteers from the Grand Strand have arrived in Louisiana to assist victims of Hurricane Ida. Twenty South Carolina-based volunteers offered to go to Louisiana to help, including six from eastern SC, which includes the Myrtle Beach area. One of those volunteers, Gigi Spell, is going on an out of state assignment for the first time. Spell will help deliver meals to hurricane victims, along with Gary Thurman, also of the Grand Strand. (WMBF)
  3. Protesters from two local groups gathered Sunday on Highway 501 near Myrtle Beach to voice their objections to COVID-19 vaccine mandates. The groups peacefully assembled in the Carolina Forest neighborhood with signs protesting possible vaccine mandates, and other messages about coronavirus-related mandates. (WBTW)
  4. Horry County Schools reported that it has had 6,800 students under quarantine, according to the district's new dashboard. The numbers were added to the dashboard after parents expressed concern that quarantine information was not available on the new platform. There are 161 staff members in quarantine as well. Students and staff are quarantined if they are believed to have been exposed to COVID-19. These numbers are separate from the number of active cases, which are also reported on the dashboard. 5. Game wardens from Region 1 were patrolling the waters near Cherry Grove in North Myrtle Beach and discovered a man that had been fishing had caught more than the legal limit of flounder. The boat was stopped around 2:00 a.m. by an officer, who said the man claimed he had no fish. A closer look revealed he had 25 flounder on board — 20 more than the legal limit. (wpde.com)

About me: The best decision I ever made was relocating to the Myrtle Beach area from New England a few years ago, with my three dogs and three cats. I enjoy dogs, cats, road trips, photography, writing, vegetarian food, live music, bicycling and above all my daily walks on the beaches in and around the Grand Strand.
