1. World's only wild Venus flytraps in NC, SC are threatened. This film follows rescuers (charlotteobserver.com) — Just outside Myrtle Beach, the Lewis Ocean Bay Heritage Preserve shelters the last wild Venus flytraps in South Carolina, even as development, fire-management challenges and poaching threaten their survival. A new documentary, "Flytrap Town," follows local and regional "Flytrap Champions" who rescue plants from construction sites, while conservationists push for stronger federal protections and invite public support through donations and future educational screenings.
2. UPDATE: Rip current statement for Myrtle Beach area and Coastal Georgetown until Saturday evening (myrtlebeachonline.com) — Beachgoers in the Myrtle Beach area face dangerous rip currents today, with a National Weather Service statement in effect from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m. Officials warn that even strong swimmers can be pulled from shore, urge people to swim near lifeguards, avoid flooded roads and vulnerable causeways, and signal for help rather than fighting the current.
3. Runners hit Myrtle Beach streets for Mini Marathon, Coastal 5K (wbtw.com) — Myrtle Beach streets filled with runners Saturday for the surf-themed Mini Marathon and Coastal 5K, starting near 8th Avenue North and finishing by the Boardwalk. Locals and visitors chased personal bests, collected surfboard medals, and wrapped up with music, refreshments, and awards at Grand Strand Brewing Company, including cash prizes and special recognition for Horry and Georgetown county runners.
4. Indigo Girls cancel concert after fatal crash involving tour bus (sfchronicle.com) — Fans in Myrtle Beach expecting to see the Indigo Girls on Saturday night will need new plans after the duo canceled the show following a fatal crash that killed their longtime tour bus driver on I-20. The band says it's grieving the loss, has paused several dates, and will announce rescheduled plans once they're ready to resume touring.
5. Horry County schools, police investigate bomb hoaxes at two high schools this week (wpde.com) — Bomb threats this week triggered brief lockdowns at Conway High and investigations at North Myrtle Beach High, though police later confirmed the Conway threat was a computer-generated hoax. Horry County Schools also reported unrelated lockdowns at North Myrtle Beach Middle and Waterway Elementary while officers searched for a nearby suspect, underscoring ongoing safety vigilance across Grand Strand campuses.
