Here are the top five stories in Myrtle Beach today:
- Myrtle Beach has certainly had no shortage of lottery winners in the last several months! Monday night was no exception. A Powerball player was short one number from hitting the full jackpot but still won $100,000! The new Powerball jackpot has reached $610 million so far. The drawing is tonight. Tickets need to be purchased by 9:59 p.m. (wpde.com)
- A suspect has been arrested in one of three armed robberies that took place in Myrtle Beach during the holidays. That suspect is connected to the robbery that occurred on New Year's Eve around noontime at Myrtle Street and Collins Street. No one was hurt in that incident, and the man is being held without bond. The other two robberies are still being investigated. (WMBF)
- Residents of Crescent Beach and Windy Hill have expressed their displeasure at a proposed rezoning of a section of 17th Avenue South in North Myrtle Beach. The proposal would bring new hotels and condos to the area, as well as other businesses. This might necessitate creation of new sewerage and road expansions. Residents feel the infrastructure there is not sufficient to support the expansion. NMB City Council will have a workshop next week and discuss the matter further after that meeting. (wpde.com)
- Grand Strand area animal shelters were hectic and busy during the challenging year of 2021. While they did find homes for hundreds of needy animals, still more were surrendered to the three main shelters. All the shelters have faced growth issues and facility limitations, with Grand Strand Humane having to move to a temporary location, and Kind Keeper purchasing land in Longs for expansion. Both shelters are hopeful that 2022 will be an easier year, and they're thankful for the community who came forward in a huge effort of support in 2021. (WBTW)
- The Housing Authority of Myrtle Beach is accepting pre-applications for the Housing Choice Voucher lottery after pausing the program since 2019. The program provides affordable, safe housing for families in Horry County. Applications must be made online by January 11th, and there is no application fee. Acceptances will be via a lottery system, and when that is over the organization will randomly select 1,000 applicants for a Voucher Waiting List. (WMBF)

Today in Myrtle Beach:
- Travel In Place @ Horry County Library North Myrtle Beach (11:00 AM)
- Horry Co Ad Hoc Committee Meeting/Public Hearing @ Council Chambers (6:00 PM)
- Paul Grimshaw Band @ Dead Dog Saloon (7:00 PM)
From my notebook:
- Mayor Bethune and Myrtle Beach city leaders are hopeful that 2022 will be even more successful than 2021 — and 2021 was considered a "banner year." The city had record-breaking tourism numbers, and businesses thrived as a result. With MB becoming now a year-round destination, it's important to add events all year, such as Winter Wonderland At The Beach, which was a huge hit last month. (WBTW)
- Myrtle Beach International Airport: After a brief hiatus, we're happy to report that nonstop service to Niagara Falls International Airport returns April 20 on Spirit Airlines. Book your travel at www.spirit.com (Facebook)
- Brookgreen Gardens has a bunch of great programs happening in January. Some of the events are already marked as "full" on Brookgreen's website (including the one scheduled for today). Others require online registration ahead of time. Call or check the website for details. (holycitysinner.com)
- You might be inclined to change their names, but either way, these adorable pets are just begging for a new home on the Grand Strand! (Myrtle Beach Patch)
- Check out this fabulous web page about the Grand Strand! It includes not only a description of the various beaches from north to south, as well as both State Parks, but there is also a list of 10 facts you may not know about MB, and a blurb about the seafood capital of South Carolina — Murrells Inlet! Enjoy! (Suncruisermedia.com)
- No charges will be filed in the case of a person who poured gasoline into a storm drain near the Marshwalk over the weekend. A faulty fitting on a gas tank in the man's boat produced a gasoline leak, and he was removing the gas tank from the boat to avoid fire. The man hired a clean-up service voluntarily. (WMBF)

About me: The best decision I ever made was relocating to the Myrtle Beach area from New England a few years ago, with my three dogs and three cats. I enjoy dogs, cats, road trips, photography, writing, vegetarian food, live music, bicycling and above all my daily walks on the beaches in and around the Grand Strand.
