Here are the top five stories in Myrtle Beach today:

  1. After a two-year pause due to COVID-19, and a number of stops and starts, Atlantic Beach Bikefest is on! The motorcycle festival returns to Atlantic Beach Memorial Day Weekend. Town leaders had to hammer out many details to make the decision, which was announced after Monday's town council meeting. (WMBF)
  2. Down the road, Myrtle Beach leaders approved a festival, too. The Sun Fun Festival will be held May 6, 7, and 8 in Plyler Park. The family-friendly, three-day festival is sponsored by the Gay Dolphin, and has become a Myrtle Beach staple, bringing thousands of people to the downtown area of the city. (WMBF)
  3. Myrtle Beach first responders saved a North Carolina man who was bitten by a Gaboon viper, one of the most venomous snakes in the world. The snakes are native to Africa, and the Wilmington man was bitten while caring for the reptile. Thad Bowman, a MBFD paramedic, and Dr. Jarratt Lark, a doctor at Grand Strand Medical Center, were called in to help the victim due to their experience with exotic snakes. The two consulted with experts in Colorado, and saved the man's life by giving him 44 vials of anti-venom. Bowman and Lark were presented with Civilian Life Saving awards for their work. The bite victim was hospitalized for several months, but is now living a normal life. (WBTW)
  4. After a lot of wrangling, North Myrtle Beach City Council gave its first nod to the Crescent Beach overlay plan that has drawn significant disapproval from neighborhood residents. The plan was approved 7 -0 but has to pass a second reading before taking effect. (Myhorrynews)
  5. On Tuesday, Myrtle Beach City Council passed a resolution expressing support for Ukraine, and condemning Russia's invasion of the country. The resolution reads, in part: "WHEREAS, the City of Myrtle Beach joins with other communities, with the United States and with other peace-loving and democratic nations throughout the world in condemning this Putin-led attack on Ukraine and its people, institutions, infrastructure and democracy". Kathy Mandell

About me: The best decision I ever made was relocating to the Myrtle Beach area from New England a few years ago, with my three dogs and three cats. I enjoy dogs, cats, road trips, photography, writing, vegetarian food, live music, bicycling and above all my daily walks on the beaches in and around the Grand Strand.
