Here are the top four stories in Myrtle Beach today:
- Atlantic Beach has received a $25,000 grant to improve beach access. The funds will be used to build walkovers and vehicle access at beach entryways. The walkovers would be themed, depicting artifacts, photos and stories of Atlantic Beach's rich history. The town is also readying itself for BikeFest — happening on Memorial Day weekend, and there were discussions about the town's new Community Center at this week's Council meeting. (WBTW)
- Surfside Beach has its own little bit of history. Hundreds of years ago, the area was an indigo plantation. This week, the town's historical society revealed historic plaques commemorating Ark Plantation. The plaques are located at Willow Drive and 3rd Avenue South, which is where the main house of Ark Plantation once stood. (wpde.com)
- News surrounding the Surfside Pier reconstruction has been sparse, but here's a brief update on what's happening this week. The road adjacent to the pier will be closed to enable construction to occur, and this is likely to cause some traffic headaches. It is not known how long the area will be closed. The beach can be accessed on foot via the North Seaside Drive walkway. Council members are debating whether or not to add extra parking meters around the area. (wpde.com) (WMBF)
- In advance of the summer rush, the city of North Myrtle Beach has revised its guidelines for chair and umbrella rentals at the beach. Rentals can be ordered ahead of time online through mid-October. Beach Services will provide umbrella and chair rentals on a daily, weekly or monthly basis and employees will set them up for residents or visitors. After this season, the city will be eliminating seasonal rentals for chairs and umbrellas. (wpde.com)

Myrtle Beach pic of the day:
Wednesday's pic of the day was sent in recently by Anthony Kateridge. Anthony said he took this amazing photo of a rainbow over the parking lot at the Asher Theatre. Nice shot, Anthony!

About me: The best decision I ever made was relocating to the Myrtle Beach area from New England a few years ago, with my three dogs and three cats. I enjoy dogs, cats, road trips, photography, writing, vegetarian food, live music, bicycling and above all my daily walks on the beaches in and around the Grand Strand.
