Here are the top five stories today in Myrtle Beach:
- A pilot was killed when his banner plane crashed at Grand Strand Airport in North Myrtle Beach Saturday afternoon. David Flading, 56, was originally from Pennsylvania, but has lived in Myrtle Beach for about two decades. He was the only person on board the single-engine Piper PA-12 aircraft. The yellow plane is one of the aircrafts beachgoers see flying advertising banners over the beaches of NMB every day. The NTSB will have a preliminary report on the crash in about two weeks. - Also in North Myrtle Beach, authorities have confirmed that a 19-year-old from Virginia drowned on Saturday morning. Kyle Brown was pulled from the ocean near 6th Avenue North around 7 a.m. Saturday, and died at the hospital some time afterwards. (wpde.com)
- A 47-year-old man from Columbia, SC was killed in a motorcycle crash on Saturday morning in Myrtle Beach. The crash occurred in the early-morning hours of Saturday near 71st Avenue North and Kings Highway. MBPD is investigating. (wpde.com)
- On Sunday, Conway police responded to an incident near Coastal Carolina University that they are calling a homicide. The police were called to Coastal Club Student Living apartments, an off-campus housing facility near Highway 544 at around 6 a.m. Sunday morning after reports of gunshots being heard. The Conway PD would like anyone with information on this incident to call them at (843) 248-1790. (WMBF)
- The City of Myrtle Beach held its traditional Military Appreciation Days Parade over the weekend at Market Common. The event honors those who died while serving in the military. One veteran who attended the event said, "Today is a day of remembrance of those who gave the ultimate sacrifice." The annual parade and other services can be very emotional for veterans and families of people who served in the military. (WMBF) A free picnic was held later on in Valor Park, for about 1,000 people — and organizers ran out of food. (wpde.com)

Our Memorial Day pic is from reader Diane Geberth, who caught this great shot of a railroad bridge near Conway while on a recent boat trip. Thanks for the cool photo, Diane!

From my notebook:
- The Humane Society of North Myrtle Beach: Kris from Jordan's Way was at the shelter most of Sunday, and Meaghan, the shelter's marketing manager locked herself in a kennel with pup Lemon Drop to help raise $20K for the shelter. The shelter's monthly operating expenses exceed $40,000 and the animals are dependent on the shelter, which is dependent on the community's donations. It's not too late to donate, even though Jordan's Way has moved on to its next stop on its 2022 national tour. (Facebook)
- The National Weather Service confirmed that an EF0 tornado touched down in Loris during the storms that came through Horry County on Friday. The twister was 20 yards wide, and was on the ground for about a mile, with wind speed of 65 mph. There was damage near Main Street and Monroe Street in Loris, and the tornado touched down near Circle Drive. There was also evidence of the tornado near Azalea Drive and Graham Street, before it lifted off the ground near Fox Bay Road. There were no injuries reported. (WBTW)
- A reminder that early voting will begin Tuesday, May 31 in South Carolina for the June 14 primaries. Early voting will be available through June 10, except for the weekend of June 4 and 5. Voters will need photo identification, and can go to any early-voting location in their county and vote as they normally would on Election Day. Absentee voting is now by mail only. (WMBF)

About me: The best decision I ever made was relocating to the Myrtle Beach area from New England a few years ago, with my three dogs and three cats. I enjoy dogs, cats, road trips, photography, writing, vegetarian food, live music, bicycling and above all my daily walks on the beaches in and around the Grand Strand.
