Here are the five top stories in Myrtle Beach today:

  1. The FBI was involved in a situation on Tuesday in Myrtle Beach when a man barricaded himself inside a home and shot at police officers. Authorities say the MBPD responded to an apparent domestic dispute call at Longleaf Circle near 38th Avenue and Little River Road early Tuesday morning. A man there would not come out of the home and shot at police who did not return fire. Police negotiated with the man for most of the day. There was an explosion inside of the home, believed to be fireworks. That explosion caused the house to catch fire. MBFD arrived on scene around 3 p.m. Tear gas was used to get the suspect to exit the premises. He was then taken into custody and brought to a hospital for treatment. Some homes in the neighborhood were evacuated. Those residents were able to return home around 5 p.m. (WBTW) (wpde.com) (WMBF)
  2. A person was arrested at Myrtle Beach International Airport Tuesday afternoon. The individual climbed over a perimeter gate and went onto the runway. Control Tower personnel stopped aircraft operations until the person could be apprehended. The whole situation lasted about ten minutes. No flights were delayed. (WMBF)
  3. Myrtle Beach Pelicans fans and staff are mourning the death of the team's second dog, Deuce. The big, white Labrador retriever made his breed proud for ten years with the Pelicans. From 2008 to 2018, Deuce retrieved bats and balls and greeted fans and ballpark personnel. Tributes poured out on social media following the announcement by the MB Pelicans on Twitter. (wpde.com)
  4. Power crews in Surfside Beach had their hands full Tuesday when an early-morning traffic incident snapped a pole in half on Highway 17 Business. About 3,000 Santee Cooper customers were without power through the early afternoon. According to reports, a semi-truck struck the pole at the intersection of 17 and 544 near Ocean Lakes Campground breaking the pole in half. Traffic had to be diverted for most of the day because of downed electrical lines. (WBTW) (WMBF)
  5. Horry County School board voted to discontinue the option of full-time virtual learning for the 2023-2024 school year. The board members felt that while virtual learning may be the wave of the future, right now it is not what is best for the district. The group also voted unanimously to approve $15 million to fund a new HVAC system at Myrtle Beach High School. (wpde.com) Speaking of Horry County Schools, the 2022 report card is in, and our area schools performed above the state average in multiple categories. Sixty percent of the county's schools received a ranking of "good" or "excellent" in South Carolina's annual report card. (wpde.com)

About me: The best decision I ever made was relocating to the Myrtle Beach area from New England a few years ago, with my three dogs and three cats. I enjoy dogs, cats, road trips, photography, writing, vegetarian food, live music, bicycling and above all my daily walks on the beaches in and around the Grand Strand.
