Here are the top stories today in Myrtle Beach:
- A banner plane made an unexplained emergency landing on the beach Sunday around lunchtime, according to Myrtle Beach Fire Department Captain Jonathan Evans. The small, yellow, single-engine plane, normally used to fly advertising banners over the beach, landed on the sand in front of the Dunes Golf and Beach Club in the 9000 block of North Ocean Boulevard. Only the pilot was on board, and was not injured. Information regarding the cause for the emergency landing was not available at the time of this report. (WBTW)
- North Myrtle Beach volunteers tackled trash along the waterways around town during Saturday's Beach/Creek Sweep event. Approximately 60 people showed up to volunteer for the event to clean up litter after the end of tourist season, and to help protect the natural resources by keeping beaches and waterways cleaned up. Trash had been visible along some of the marshes in recent weeks due to plastic refuse and bottles being thrown on the ground, along with beach toys and other litter strewn about. The event was hosted by the Keep North Myrtle Beach Beautiful Commission. (WMBF)
- The 54th annual World Championship Chili Cook-Off happened this past weekend at Burroughs and Chapin Pavilion. One family has won quite a few chili competitions around the United States, to raise funds for charities. The Levys are more or less chili experts, and even their son has won some youth chili championships. A different charity is chosen by them each year, and they have a lot of fun participating in chili events around the country. (WPDE)
- The undefeated Chanticleers were victorious over the University of Buffalo football team this weekend, bringing the Chants to a 3-0 start for the second year in a row. The CCU team did drop to number 17 in the latest rankings released on Sunday. The win over Buffalo is the first-ever win in the history of the program over a Mid-American Conference opponent. The team returns home to Horry County to host my hometown team, UMass, next Saturday, September 25th. Kick-off is 1:00 p.m. at Brooks Stadium. (WBTW) See also: (WMBF)
- The Myrtle Beach Area Chamber of Commerce is happy that this summer's tourist season broke occupancy rate records for the Grand Strand. Businesses are happy, and the MBACC expects high volume to continue for the next few months. To underscore that, it launched two advertising campaigns to help lure visitors to the Grand Strand throughout the fall and winter. The first one is called "Welcome to Summore" and focuses on the lengthier beach season here; the second campaign is highlighting the Winter Wonderland festival from November 26 through January 2, 2022. About me: The best decision I ever made was relocating to the Myrtle Beach area from New England a few years ago, with my three dogs and three cats. I enjoy dogs, cats, road trips, photography, writing, vegetarian food, live music, bicycling and above all my daily walks on the beaches in and around the Grand Strand.
