Here are the top four stories in Myrtle Beach today:
- Developers who had proposed a new housing development near Highway 707 in the Burgess community withdrew their plans before the Horry County Planning Commission meeting took place this week. The development had been hotly opposed by local residents who were concerned about adding 4,000 homes in the already fast-growing community near St. James High School and the Waccamaw River. (WBTW)
- Similarly, Grande Dunes residents are expressing their own concerns about a proposed apartment complex called Cottages at Cane Patch, that could be built there. The project would use 26 acres of land between 71st and 76th Avenues North in Grande Dunes. At least 300 individual townhome units would be created in the imaginative complex — a new type of setup that has taken hold in other areas of the Grand Strand. (WMBF)
- Attempted murder and kidnapping suspect, Ronald Lee Ward, Jr. was arrested in North Carolina and is awaiting extradition back to Horry County where the alleged crimes occurred. He was found inside a locked room in Forest City, NC, and arrested by the Carolinas Regional Fugitive Task Force (CRFTF). On December 24th, Ward allegedly kidnapped and attempted to kill a woman in Horry County. (WLOS)
- The Grand Strand is experiencing lower COVID-19 testing availability as cases continue to rise. DHEC says there are longer lines for testing and longer wait times for the results due to the recent surge in test demand. There are an average of 300 testing sites in South Carolina on any given day right now. Demand escalated over the holidays when omicron hit heavily. DHEC has ordered half a million rapid tests which should be available soon. (WMBF)

- The Humane Society of North Myrtle Beach: We'd like to introduce you to Fern! She is a 7-year-old hound mix, who is looking to put down some new roots! 2021 was R-U-F-F for this sweet gal😢 A Good Samaritan found Fern, and it was evident she had been lost for awhile. We need to raise funds for her heartworm treatment before she can be adopted. (Facebook)

You'll also be entered into another contest for a home theater package. (Myrtle Beach Patch)
- A Pawleys Island puppy that was named after Betty White is recovering from extensive surgery in her foster home. The folks at All4Paws Animal Rescue believe the four-month-old puppy had been hit by a car. She had a broken femur and damage to both hips. The dog was rescued at approximately the same time Betty White died. They named the dog after the entertainer, who loved animals. Donations to the puppy's continuing medical care can be made online. About me: The best decision I ever made was relocating to the Myrtle Beach area from New England a few years ago, with my three dogs and three cats. I enjoy dogs, cats, road trips, photography, writing, vegetarian food, live music, bicycling and above all my daily walks on the beaches in and around the Grand Strand.
