Here are the top five stories in Myrtle Beach today:
- Weather conditions on Saturday prompted officials in several areas, including Horry County and the city of Conway, to issue burn bans. The South Carolina Forestry Commission also issued a red flag alert for South Carolina, statewide. The red flag alert does not ban burning, specifically, but it asks residents to think twice before doing outdoor burning, and consider postponing the activity. The areas that did enact burn bans put them into effect immediately, and they should last for the next several days. (WBTW)
- Senator Greg Hembree (R-Horry County) is one of 35 South Carolina lawmakers who voted in favor of a bill to repeal the requirement for a "certificate of need" for new or expanding health care facilities. The lawmakers say that the certificate of need approval is antiquated, and creates an appeals process whereby competing health care systems can challenge approval of new or expanded facilities. With the aging population in the Grand Strand area, and the increasing population as well, Hembree is especially concerned for Horry County. Four newly-approved hospitals are currently stalled by the appeals process because the competing hospital groups have filed challenges against each other. (WBTW)
- Painter's Homemade Ice Cream in Garden City on North Waccamaw Drive has been made aware that they cannot return to their building and will have to close for the 2022 season. The popular ice cream shop is next to Garden City Pier, which just re-opened for the season last week. The shop owners said their building is being demolished to make room for parking, and that they are heartbroken. Discussions are taking place regarding relocating the shop. (wpde.com)
- Surfside Beach leaders are making safety a priority by expanding the number of cameras in the town. Currently, there are 20 cameras throughout the beachside community, and the plan is to double that number to 40 cameras by July 1. The town is seeking proposals from vendors to install and upgrade the camera system, which will help Surfside Police view potential crimes and respond more quickly, plus have a recording of any such events. The vendor proposal deadline is March 30. (WMBF)
- Ukrainian-owned Old Town Crepes bakery in Myrtle Beach is raising money for Ukraine. Owner Tetyana Romanenko wishes she could do more, but for now she is asking the community for monetary donations to send to Ukraine. All donations will go toward food and supplies in Ukraine, where a lot of citizens have lost everything and are sleeping in shelters. Romanenko has already sent around $2,400 from the bakery's profits to her homeland, and will accept donations for as long as there is a need. (WBTW)

- A new seasonal farm-to-table restaurant is open in Myrtle Beach, and it will have a ribbon-cutting ceremony on Thursday, March 31, according to a press release from Myrtle Beach Chamber of Commerce. Heirloom Bistro opened last month, unveiling a tiered prix fixe menu with a choice of selections within either a 3-course or 5-course meal. Owners Shaun Baxter and Sharon Treffeisen are excited to add a lunch menu and patio seating soon. Take-out is available. The eatery is open Monday through Saturday at 4 p.m. The restaurant is closed on Sundays. (HeirloomBistroMB.com)
- News13's Pet of the Weekend is Buddy, an 8-year-old mixed-breed dog who was surrendered to Grand Strand Humane Society when his owner became ill and could no longer care for Buddy. He is house-trained, loves car rides, and has a lot of energy. The white and brown pup is good with other dogs, and loves everybody. (WBTW)

About me: The best decision I ever made was relocating to the Myrtle Beach area from New England a few years ago, with my three dogs and three cats. I enjoy dogs, cats, road trips, photography, writing, vegetarian food, live music, bicycling and above all my daily walks on the beaches in and around the Grand Strand.
