Here are the top five stories today in Myrtle Beach:
- Legislation to ban the "Carolina Squat" motor vehicle modification passed the Senate, and will now head to the South Carolina House for approval. The modification raises the front fender of a vehicle four (or more) inches higher than the rear fender. If the law passes, a violation of the ban will be a misdemeanor, carrying a fine of $25-$50. North Carolina's ban of the Carolina Squat took effect in December. (WBTW)
- After searching the Lumber River for former Chadbourn, NC police chief, Anthony Spivey, authorities realized the scene where Spivey's boat, some handwritten letters, and a rifle were found was probably staged, and that Spivey had faked his own death. Spivey's aunt let him stay with her in Loris for a night or two, and never expected the police to come swarming her apartment complex in the middle of the night looking for the man. His aunt is a little rattled by the experience, but says she didn't harbor Spivey and won't give up on her nephew. Spivey was arrested at his aunt's home, and faces a multitude of charges. (WMBF) Two other individuals were arrested in connection with the case, for obstruction of justice. (WPDE)
- Three people were arrested, and two remain at large, in connection with a drug trafficking investigation in Pawleys Island. Agents from the DEA, assisted by Georgetown and Horry County law enforcement, seized thousands of dollars worth of cocaine, heroin, fentanyl, meth, and some firearms in the case. (WPDE)
- The threatened longleaf pine tree is key to preventing wildfires in South Carolina, according to some experts. The long-needled pine trees were the dominant pine species from Virginia to eastern Texas prior to development of the south. They were used as a major source of lumber, and today only 3% of the trees' population remains. The endangered trees also provide habitat for other endangered species, such as certain birds, and Venus flytraps. Controlled burning, while seemingly counterintuitive, is one solution, along with replanting. Experts are hopeful the tree species will regain a foothold. (WBTW)
- A Myrtle Beach market and the World Food Program are ready to help Ukrainians in need. Gloria Kuqo's Europa Market in Myrtle Beach specializes in Eastern European fare. The conflict in Ukraine hits close to home for Kuqo and her customers, many of whom are from Ukraine and Russia. Meanwhile, former SC governor David Beasley, executive director of World Food Program, says his organization is in place and ready to help people in Ukraine. (WCBD News 2) Yachtsman Resort in Myrtle Beach showed its support by flying Ukraine's flag alongside the American flag and the South Carolina flag. (WPDE) A group of Ukrainians living in Myrtle Beach gathered locally on Thursday to protest Russia's invasion of their home country. (WMBF)

About me: The best decision I ever made was relocating to the Myrtle Beach area from New England a few years ago, with my three dogs and three cats. I enjoy dogs, cats, road trips, photography, writing, vegetarian food, live music, bicycling and above all my daily walks on the beaches in and around the Grand Strand.
