Here are the top five stories in Myrtle Beach today:

  1. Some of us thought we were in for a soaked holiday weekend when a pop-up surprise tropical storm breezed through our area early Saturday morning. Tropical Storm Colin dumped a bit of rain, and stirred up the wind along the Grand Strand, but the storm mostly stayed offshore. Skies cleared up enough for outdoor fun by lunchtime. Authorities did warn about dangerous rip currents as Colin sailed up the Carolina coast and eventually out to sea. More rain is likely Sunday. (WBTW)
  2. Reports indicate that Myrtle Beach International Airport did not experience any cancellations or delays on Friday — unlike other airports around the country that saw more than 2,000 canceled flights. Traffic at MYR is well above pre-pandemic levels. Travelers reported very few issues and experienced brief wait times as they went through TSA. (wpde.com)
  3. The influx of visitors this weekend will be one of the busiest for area businesses. The MB Chamber of Commerce reports that hotels and resorts are at 91% capacity. Some restaurants are experiencing food supply chain shortages and staffing issues, but they are prepared to welcome tourists with open arms. (WMBF) Myrtle Beach Police are stepping up coverage for the holiday, with extra staff on beaches and about 90 officers on duty each night. Traffic units from around South Carolina are helping the PD with traffic issues. (WMBF)
  4. ICYMI: Here's the rundown of where to watch Fourth of July fireworks around the Grand Strand on Sunday and Monday, courtesy of News13. (WBTW)
  5. The new fiscal year for Horry County government began on Friday, and there are several changes in place throughout the Grand Strand. Increased property taxes are on the list for Conway and Myrtle Beach, MBPD officers received pay increases, Horry County and Conway increased pay for their employees and parking meter rates went up in Myrtle Beach. Myrtle Beach pic of the day:

When I first moved to South Carolina, I lived near the MarshWalk, and Belin Community Church in Murrells Inlet. I was delighted to receive this photo from reader Paul Sciurba. He snapped this photo behind Belin Church, overlooking the Murrells Inlet marsh! Thanks for the pretty picture, Paul, and the memories of my first neighborhood on the Grand Strand.

  • The Humane Society of North Myrtle Beach: Canine "receptionist" Link started his new job at Elliott Beach Rentals offices. Just kidding! (The Humane Society of North Myrtle Beach via Facebook) P.S. Now through July 7, HSNMB is waiving all adoption fees as part of its Kia Pet Adoption Event! (Humane Society NMB)

About me: The best decision I ever made was relocating to the Myrtle Beach area from New England a few years ago, with my three dogs and three cats. I enjoy dogs, cats, road trips, photography, writing, vegetarian food, live music, bicycling and above all my daily walks on the beaches in and around the Grand Strand.
