How about some Friday weather, first?

Humid and mostly cloudy throughout the day. High: 86 Low: 73.

Here are the top stories in Myrtle Beach today:

  1. The Horry County Police Department will expand into the Carolina Forest neighborhood due to rapid growth in the popular part of the North Precinct. More than one third of this year's emergency calls were in Carolina Forest. The new station will be part of the Central Coast Complex that is being built on Hinson Drive near International Drive. There are vacancies in the police department, and applications are being accepted now. The new precinct is expected to be ready in two to three years. (WMBF)
  2. The demand for COVID-19 testing throughout the Grand Strand is burdening the healthcare industry amid a shortage of workers. Tidelands Health has plenty of testing supplies, but not enough workers to administer tests. They are currently limiting testing to people with symptoms. Asymptomatic people are not being tested at this time. Other area hospitals are having the same experience, and expect to see it escalate as President Biden's mandate for vaccines or testing at large companies gets underway. (WPDE)
  3. A Highway 90 task force has been implemented by Horry County officials to work on the issues surrounding Highway 90, Highway 905 and the Conway corridor's various infrastructure projects and proposals. The issues have arisen because of the rapid growth in that area, and residents' opposition to some expansion plans. Projects will be scheduled in order of importance and the group will use a phased plan to move the projects ahead. Their first meeting will occur soon, but has not been scheduled. (WBTW)
  4. The new multi-use paths along Carolina Forest Boulevard are now open, but there have been problems right from the start. The pathways are not designed for golf carts, but police say no law prohibits them from being there. Therefore people are driving the vehicles on the new paths. The golf carts are a little too big, and walkers, bikers and wheelchair users are sometimes unable to share the path because of width limitations. Some suggestions were made at this week's Civic Association meeting, including the possibility of installing poles that golf carts can't fit through, or making the path a little wider while it's still under construction. 5. The shooting mystery reported in yesterday's newsletter looks to be solved now. A 61-year-old man from Greenwood, SC was charged with filing a false police report, unlawful carry of a weapon, and possession of marijuana after he showed up at a Grand Strand hospital with a gunshot wound, claiming he had been a victim of a shooting. It turns out the wound was self-inflicted. A second person was also arrested for obstruction of justice in the case. (WMBF)

About me: The best decision I ever made was relocating to the Myrtle Beach area from New England a few years ago, with my three dogs and three cats. I enjoy dogs, cats, road trips, photography, writing, vegetarian food, live music, bicycling and above all my daily walks on the beaches in and around the Grand Strand.

Have a news tip or suggestion for an upcoming Myrtle Beach Daily? I'm all ears. You can reach me at myrtlebeach@patch.com.
