Here are the top five stories in Myrtle Beach today:
- A huge honor is being bestowed upon the Carolina Country Music Fest — the four-day music extravaganza was just nominated for Festival of the Year by the American Country Music Awards. Several other festivals around the country have been nominated. The AMC Music Awards will happen on March 7th. (WMBF)
- On Wednesday, a Surfside Beach man pleaded guilty to reckless homicide by operation of a boat in the April 2021 death of Corey Parag. When the boat that John Kody Ray was operating hit a floating deck on the ICW in Myrtle Beach, Parag was killed. Ray was operating under the influence at the time. He was sentenced to three years in prison, and five years probation upon release. (MyHorryNews.com)
- Recent data from ApartmentList.com shows that Myrtle Beach is under a unique strain of high rental costs for tenants living in the city, as compared to anywhere else in South Carolina. Rent prices and homeownership prices have skyrocketed with the rapid growth of the area, and there is little in the way of both available and affordable housing. (wpde.com)
- Congressman Tom Rice (R-SC7) has introduced a bill to protect victims of natural disasters after witnessing the way certain federal agencies including FEMA have handled hurricane relief in our area. The bill should speed up processes and prompt FEMA and other agencies to implement procedures for debris removal. The bill focuses on advanced preparation, advanced planning, and disaster remediation. (WCBD News 2)
- Horry County is putting its new stormwater equipment to use. Crews are out and about, clearing drainage ditches in the county. They are also working on wetlands projects, opening up channels within the wetlands. Usually seven miles of ditches are cleared monthly, but they want to increase that to ten or more miles per month. About me: The best decision I ever made was relocating to the Myrtle Beach area from New England a few years ago, with my three dogs and three cats. I enjoy dogs, cats, road trips, photography, writing, vegetarian food, live music, bicycling and above all my daily walks on the beaches in and around the Grand Strand.
