Here are the top five stories today in Myrtle Beach:
- It's move-in weekend for Coastal Carolina University students! Friday started the weekend with tornado warnings in the morning and some flooding later on, but that did not dampen the spirits of CCU staff members and students moving in. A CCU spokesperson said move-in day is a high-energy day, students are excited and nervous. Locals should expect increased traffic near the university all weekend as students and their families converge on the area. (wpde.com) (WBTW)
- A family of 28 people who were staying in a vacation rental property when they were awakened early Sunday morning as an out-of-control vehicle caused significant damage to the house and the family's vehicles has spoken to WMBF News. The building caught fire and all three floors quickly became engulfed in flames. Eleven children and seventeen adults managed to get to safety, but their vacation was ruined. They had driven five separate vehicles from upstate New York for their NMB vacation that had been planned for over a year. Only one of those cars is still functional and the family is trying to figure out how to get home. The driver of the vehicle that crashed is hospitalized in critical condition. (WMBF)
- At a packed planning commission meeting in Georgetown County officials voted 3-2 against approving two new housing developments in Pawleys Island. Residents did not withhold their opinions on how the two proposed neighborhoods would impact the tiny seaside community. Nearly everyone in attendance expressed concern over a small flood-prone site near Petigru Drive and MLK Road where 53 townhomes were proposed to have been placed. The other site at nearby Parkerville Road is an historic African-American community where 56 townhomes were proposed to be built. The meeting lasted nearly four hours, ending in the 3-2 thumbs down vote by the commission. However, the proposal still needs to go before Georgetown County Council for the final say on the matter. (WMBF)
- Over in Horry County, residents living near a Carolina Forest golf course reacted similarly to a proposed housing development. Many residents deliberately chose to live near River Oaks Golf Club, but now it looks as though the course is going to close. The course owners eliminated nine holes for residential development a few years ago. Now they have plans to convert the rest of the course into a 500-home neighborhood. In this case, the county's permission is not needed because rezoning was previously approved. (Myhorrynews)
- The woman who was bitten by a shark in Myrtle Beach earlier this week is recovering and she spoke to ABC15 News about her experience. Karren Sites of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania was in waist-deep water in the surf at 75th Avenue North beach when she was bitten on the arm by a shark. Her eight-year-old grandson witnessed the whole thing. Sites says she "felt something, I guess, bite me" and then she looked down to see a shark on her arm. She kept pushing the animal and it let go of her arm. All of this happened right around noon on her first day of vacation. She was taken to the hospital and received hundreds of stitches. (wpde.com)

- Want to help animals, but just aren't able to adopt another one? Please consider sponsoring a shelter pet! What does a sponsor do? It's simple! You sponsor a dog or cat for $50, which helps to cover the cost of food and preventative care while the animal is in the care of the Humane Society of NMB. When your sponsored pet finds a furever home, you'll be the first to know! HSNMB currently has eight dogs and one cat that need sponsoring. (The Humane Society of North Myrtle Beach via Facebook)

About me: The best decision I ever made was relocating to the Myrtle Beach area from New England a few years ago, with my three dogs and three cats. I enjoy dogs, cats, road trips, photography, writing, vegetarian food, live music, bicycling and above all my daily walks on the beaches in and around the Grand Strand.
