Happy Wednesday, Myrtle Beach! Here's everything you need to know happening on the Grand Strand today.

Let's take a look at Wednesday's weather:

Sunny skies. High: 86 Low: 69.

Here are the top stories in Myrtle Beach today:

  1. Myrtle Beach City Council met Tuesday night and approved several upcoming events for the holiday season. The list includes the New Year's Eve celebration "Southern Times Square" at Market Common, from 9 p.m. - 1 a.m. with food, entertainment, stuff for kids, and fireworks at midnight. Also approved was the annual tree lighting ceremony, and horse-drawn carriage rides both happening at Market Common; the DeVille Street Festival, a concert on November 6th, the Myrtle Beach Jazz Festival in October, and Bike the Beach on November 13. (WMBF)
  2. At the same City Council meeting, retirees pressed Myrtle Beach leaders to figure out a way to keep the health benefits they were promised when they retired. Almost one hundred retired city workers signed a letter to the Council expressing their concerns about how to obtain affordable private health insurance starting in January when the proposed benefit removal is set to occur. The council stated that it is trying to come up with a solution. (WBTW)
  3. A nationwide TikTok craze school age kids have dubbed "devious licks" has caused some destruction to Horry County Schools. The county says there have been at least 26 incidents connected to the social media trend. Basically, students post videos of themselves vandalizing school bathrooms and stealing soap dispensers, among other things. HC schools says students who participated will face consequences. (WMBF)
  4. The 2021 Myrtle Beach Fall Bike Rally kick started the autumn tourism season in true biker style this week. Businesses are seeing a steady, consistent stream of customers all day. The yearly event was originally created to bump up the post-Labor Day tourist season on the Grand Strand, and is one of the biggest motor vehicle events in town each year. Jamin Leather owner Jamin Jamie Keats says the Myrtle Beach annual fall rally is one of the best around. (WBTW)
  5. Grand Strand Down Syndrome Society is cancelling its Buddy Walk for the second year in a row due to COVID-19. Many of the society's members are immunocompromised and the non-profit's organizers feel members would be at risk if the event were to occur. The event raises funds for medical supply purchases as well as all of the organizations programs. The organization is requesting donations in lieu of the in-person event. There will be a private drive-thru event for members on October 30th. (WPDE)

About me: The best decision I ever made was relocating to the Myrtle Beach area from New England a few years ago, with my three dogs and three cats. I enjoy dogs, cats, road trips, photography, writing, vegetarian food, live music, bicycling and above all my daily walks on the beaches in and around the Grand Strand.
