Here are the top five stories in Myrtle Beach today:

  1. Additional information was released to News13 about Wednesday's four-alarm fire in Cherry Grove. Three occupants who were inside one of the burning homes jumped from a balcony to escape the flames. One broke a bone, and two have severe burns on their lower bodies. Officials reported that a dog alerted the occupants to the fire, but it is not clear if the dog escaped. The fire destroyed two homes and seriously damaged a third home. Two of the three homes were not occupied at the time. (WBTW) In a detailed Facebook post, NMB Fire Rescue indicated that two additional homes sustained minor damage. The department also thanked area fire departments that worked on scene, and neighbors who offered shade, snacks and water to firefighters and other personnel. The cause of the blaze is under investigation. (NMB Fire Rescue via Facebook)
  2. An Atlantic Beach resident was more than a little surprised to see Dominion Energy workers digging with a bulldozer in her front yard to install a gas pipeline in front of her home earlier this month. The woman says she was never told that the pipeline was being installed. Authorities say the pipeline is being placed along a public right of way for a new home being built up the street. According to Atlantic Beach's town manager and Dominion Energy, there is no law or requirement for companies installing utilities to notify residents if work is happening inside a ten-foot right of way designated by the state. (wpde.com)
  3. Two men from Myrtle Beach, and one man from Surfside Beach were sentenced in a federal child sex trafficking case, according to the U.S. Attorney's Office. Two of the men were sentenced to five years in prison, and the third was sentenced to 24 years. (WMBF)
  4. The local non-profit organization, Help 4 Kids, is seeking volunteers for its Backpack Buddies program. The program provides food to kids on Friday afternoons that will keep them fed on weekends. The group distributes more than 2,000 bags of food weekly. Food and monetary donations are also needed. (WBTW)
  5. Myrtle Beach Downtown Alliance held two meetings about new projects on Wednesday and Thursday. The group met with business owners and residents who had the opportunity to express their thoughts about new plans for the downtown area. (wpde.com)

Are you a Myrtle Beach resident looking for an investment alternative to the stock market?

Bloomberg recently asked experts where they'd invest $100,000 right now, and many of them had the same answer: fine art.

Thinking you can't afford a Picasso? Well in 2012, Congress passed the JOBS Act, which allowed for the securitization of artwork. A company called Masterworks.io built the largest platform for buying and selling art securities. In the past, you could only buy shares of companies like Apple, but with this investing app, you can unlock this powerful investment.

Meaning, you can invest in shares of million-dollar artwork. And in uncertain times, it turns out, fine art may be a wise investment. Here's why:

  • Low correlation to stocks according to Citi
  • Contemporary art historically returns 23.2% when inflation is >3%
  • Contemporary art prices outpaced the S&P 500 by 164% (1995-2021)

To learn more, visit Masterworks.io, where Myrtle Beach Daily readers can skip the waitlist.

About me: The best decision I ever made was relocating to the Myrtle Beach area from New England a few years ago, with my three dogs and three cats. I enjoy dogs, cats, road trips, photography, writing, vegetarian food, live music, bicycling and above all my daily walks on the beaches in and around the Grand Strand.
