Here are the top five stories today in Myrtle Beach:

  1. Chief Deputy Coroner Tamara Willard has confirmed that a child died following a jet ski crash that happened over the weekend. The crash occurred Sunday evening on the Intracoastal Waterway near the area of Mr. Joe White Avenue in Myrtle Beach. The child's father was operating the jet ski at the time and remains hospitalized with injuries. (wpde.com)
  2. Officials with the Myrtle Beach Fire Department have completed their investigation of the small fire at the Myrtle Beach SkyWheel that shut down the ride for a few days back in April. The department has ruled the fire as accidental. They believe that some varnish that had been used on decking near the SkyWheel was combustible, and caught fire. There were no signs of intentional fire-setting. A loading dock and a gondola were damaged. (WMBF)
  3. An anonymous News13 viewer sent video footage to the news station showing city trash collectors combining recycling and trash together on at least two recent occasions. City spokesperson Mark Kruea said that the incident did occur. He said a crew of workers made the wrong decision to combine discarded materials during rainy conditions in an effort to save time. Kruea said it will not happen again. (WBTW)
  4. Former candidate, Katrina Morrison, who ran for the Horry County Council chairperson seat, has been arrested. Morrison is accused of damaging property on A.O. Hardee & Son's land in Little River. A lighted letter-board sign was damaged and is no longer functioning. The estimated amount of damage is around $1,400. Morrison is also charged with trespassing on the property. She posted a photo of herself on Facebook showing her tampering with the sign, and she admitted to tampering with the sign during a telephone interview. (wpde.com)
  5. Lawsuits took center stage at Monday night's North Myrtle Beach City Council meeting. Five lawsuits against the city are all pending and therefore not discussed in the public forum of the meeting. City leaders unanimously passed the second reading on the highly-publicized beach equipment ordinance. The ordinance makes it illegal for any entity aside from the city's beach services department to set up, place or leave equipment on the beach during the overnight hours. (WMBF)

Myrtle Beach pic of the day:

Reader Rhonda Lennox-Langford had a great evening at the Murrells Inlet MarshWalk recently, and sent in this photo of the moon peeking out behind the clouds, with the American flag flying on a boat in the foreground. Thanks for the photo, Rhonda!

  • Here is this week's batch of adoptable pets in the Myrtle Beach area looking for forever homes. Will you take one home? Add a furry companion to your household and give back at the same time. Shelters are overcrowded and in dire need of families willing to adopt a needy dog or cat. List compiled by Patch and Petfinder. (Myrtle Beach Patch)
  • Trying to buy a house? Grand Strand home availability has increased more than 20% according to new data from Coastal Carolina Association of Realtors. Available homes are up 21.7%, and sales of single-family houses are down 16%. Looks like the low inventory problem because of the pandemic may finally be easing up. (wpde.com)
  • It's no longer an option to sit down and rest a while on the Myrtle Beach Boardwalk. The benches that have been in place for many years are gone. The benches were mostly removed due to reconstruction of the boardwalk, but also because of misuse and a high level of unwanted foot traffic for nearby businesses. The city is looking for alternatives so people can stop and rest a while if they get tired while walking. (WMBF)

About me: The best decision I ever made was relocating to the Myrtle Beach area from New England a few years ago, with my three dogs and three cats. I enjoy dogs, cats, road trips, photography, writing, vegetarian food, live music, bicycling and above all my daily walks on the beaches in and around the Grand Strand.
