Humid and partly cloudy throughout the day. High: 86 Low: 76.

Here are the top stories today in Myrtle Beach:

  1. DHEC has reported that South Carolina has reached the 50% vaccination rate among the vaccine-eligible population, according to Dr. Gerald Harmon of Tidelands Health. Harmon reports that Horry and Georgetown counties have more vaccinated people than any other county in the state. 57% of Horry County's eligible residents are fully vaccinated. Harmon made it clear in the interview that he and his medical colleagues are not judgmental when it comes to anyone who is vaccine-averse, he likes to answer patients' questions to help them make informed decisions on their health care. (WMBF)
  2. A Little River family is sharing their COVID-19 experience to inform others about the effects the virus has on children, and to urge people to get vaccinated. The Davila family's 17-year-old son, Christian, was hospitalized in Charleston, where he has been since August, after testing positive and having difficulty walking. Christian was on a ventilator for two weeks, and is now showing improvement and undergoing occupational therapy. Christian's twin brother tested positive for the virus, but did not develop serious symptoms. Their parents are sharing their story to help spread the message of the seriousness of the virus. (WBTW)
  3. Coastal Carolina University will keep its mask mandate in place after its Board of Trustees met on Friday to discuss the matter. After seeking legal counsel, the board decided to keep the rule in place until further notice. At the moment, all people on the CCU campus must be masked up, regardless of vaccination status. 4. North Myrtle Beach Humane Society executive director Tina Hunter says that the facility is quickly outgrowing its original design and purpose, and administrators are looking into getting a new building for adoptable pets within the next few years. The building was intended to hold animals for seven days, but the shelter is busier than ever due to the influx of new residents in town, and is now in disrepair. The organization is set to begin fundraising for the several million dollar effort, soon. (WBTW)

About me: The best decision I ever made was relocating to the Myrtle Beach area from New England a few years ago, with my three dogs and three cats. I enjoy dogs, cats, road trips, photography, writing, vegetarian food, live music, bicycling and above all my daily walks on the beaches in and around the Grand Strand.
