Here are the top five stories in Myrtle Beach today:

  1. The increase in COVID-19 cases and staff shortages all around the Grand Strand has resulted in county and city services to be modified in many departments. The city of North Myrtle Beach will require that anyone attending sessions in council chambers wear a mask. The city of Myrtle Beach will only be collecting household trash from residential customers for the remainder of this week because the Solid Waste Division has temporarily suspended collection of recyclables, yard waste and bulk waste. (WMBF)
  2. The latest report on Horry County's hospital capacity shows results from December 31 through January 6th, with data collected from McLeod Hospital in Loris, Grand Strand Medical Center, and Conway Medical Center. 680 adults were hospitalized at those three hospitals, during those dates. Of those 680 adults, 83 were "confirmed and suspected COVID-19 patients." The U.S. Department of Health & Human Services also reports that some states will be distinguishing between patients hospitalized "with" the virus and those hospitalized "for" the virus, going forward. (Myrtle Beach Patch)
  3. Myrtle Beach may soon have its first indoor axe-throwing venue, after the City Council amended a zoning code at this week's meeting. The name of the company is Challenge Axeccepted, and there is no exact location for the venue yet. Council still has to meet on the issue one more time. There are a few other axe-throwing venues on the Grand Strand. (WBTW)
  4. Myrtle Beach organizers are preparing for the annual Martin Luther King Jr. parade that will take place Saturday, January 15th. The route is on Ocean Boulevard from 15th Avenue North, and ending at 8th Avenue North. The parade is part of Carolina African American Heritage Foundation's Freedom Week. (wpde.com)
  5. A Conway man was arrested and charged with voluntary manslaughter in connection with a Myrtle Beach area shooting that happened on December 5th near Waccamaw Boulevard. The victim, Diego Arias Santana, 32, died on-scene. Tyshiem Naquan Connor, 22, is accused of shooting through Santana's windshield after an altercation between the two, as Santana began to drive away. Connor is at Long Detention center, awaiting a bond hearing. (Myhorrynews)

About me: The best decision I ever made was relocating to the Myrtle Beach area from New England a few years ago, with my three dogs and three cats. I enjoy dogs, cats, road trips, photography, writing, vegetarian food, live music, bicycling and above all my daily walks on the beaches in and around the Grand Strand.
