Here are the top five stories in Myrtle Beach today:

  1. South Carolina Highway Patrol is investigating a hit-and-run collision that killed one pedestrian on Breezewood Boulevard near Dick Pond Road Friday night. The deceased person's name has not been released yet. The crash happened around 9:15 p.m. Friday night, and investigators have little information. (Myhorrynews)
  2. A Loris juvenile who made a Snapchat threat against several Horry County schools has been arrested and charged. The juvenile is the third person in Horry County to be charged after posting threatening messages on social media. Authorities were able to locate the person using technology that pinpointed the address where the Snapchat message originated. Both Loris Elementary and Loris High School had police presence on Friday as a precaution. (WMBF)
  3. Meanwhile, parents at Forestbrook Middle School on Friday reacted to the news that two students were arrested for credible threats against that school, by keeping their kids home from school for the day. Some parents said their children were too scared to go to school. The school reported a high number of absences on Friday. The two juveniles were charged with unlawful communication and student threats. (WPDE)
  4. A person was struck by a gun that another person was holding on Saturday in Myrtle Beach. No shots were fired, but police were called. They reported that one person struck another person "with a blunt object" that was later determined to be a firearm. The disturbance occurred on Colonial Drive. (WMBF)
  5. Even though Horry County lifted an outdoor burning ban that had been in place for about two weeks, the South Carolina Forestry Commission still says the state is experiencing severe drought conditions. This means there is an elevated risk of wildfires statewide. (WBTW)

From my notebook:

  • Needy pet news: News13's Pet of the Weekend is Foxy Cleopatra. She's a one-year-old mixed breed pup who is brown and black with white paws, and not too big or too small. Maybe they should call her Goldilocks because she's "just right"! (WBTW) Also, don't forget about WRNN radio's Pets of the Week available for adoption from All4Paws in Pawleys Island, and Kind Keeper Animal Rescue in North Myrtle Beach. (WRNN)
  • The Humane Society of North Myrtle Beach has a senior bonded pair of dogs needing a home. Jac and Dillon are two very distinguished and older canine gentlemen who have spent their lives together on the couch with their loving owners. Unfortunately, their owners recently passed away and these senior pups are longing to be out of the shelter. (Facebook)
  • Nights of a Thousand Candles at Brookgreen Gardens has won a recent online contest, making national news for the second time in a month! The attraction won third place in America's Best Botanical Garden Holiday Lights events contest held by USA Today and 10Best. (wpde.com)
  • Santa Claus is coming to town — George-town, that is! Kids in Georgetown County can catch a Glympse of Santa by tracking his route around the county with the popular tracking app. Georgetown County Sheriff's Deputies will transport Santa around the area with scheduled sightings in the north section of the county on Monday, and the south section on Tuesday. (WPDE)
  • The Myrtle Beach Police Department and law enforcement partners statewide announce the kickoff of the Sober or Slammer! campaign. Make a plan for a safe ride home prior to any holiday celebrations. (Facebook)

That's it for Sunday, folks! I'll see you Monday for another Myrtle Beach update as we sail into the Christmas holiday!

Kathy Mandell

About me: The best decision I ever made was relocating to the Myrtle Beach area from New England a few years ago, with my three dogs and three cats. I enjoy dogs, cats, road trips, photography, writing, vegetarian food, live music, bicycling and above all my daily walks on the beaches in and around the Grand Strand.
