Here are the top five stories today in Myrtle Beach:

  1. A wrong-way crash on Highway 31 resulted in one person's death early Friday morning. Four others were injured in the two-vehicle wreck. The crash occurred near the Robert Edge Parkway exit. One of the vehicles was traveling south in the northbound lanes of Highway 31. The four injured passengers were taken to the hospital. The person who died was identified by Deputy Coronier Patty Bellamy as 23-year-old Kamiyah Belvin from Henderson, NC. (WBTW) (WMBF)
  2. After a lengthy investigation, an Horry County man has been arrested in five serial sexual assault cold cases from the early 2000s. Randy Earl Barnhill of Conway is facing 13 charges including kidnapping, assault and battery, burglary, and first degree criminal sexual conduct. Scientific technology advances were helpful in coming up with a new lead in one of the investigations, dating back to 2006. The arrest in that case led to Barnhill being suspected in four more cases that occurred from 2000 to 2005. He is in custody at Long Detention Center. (wpde.com)
  3. A fire on Friday morning in Little River destroyed a structure that was apparently under construction on Sundew Loop. Several new homes in the neighborhood are partially built. No one was hurt, and no nearby structures were damaged or affected. The cause of the fire will be investigated. Calabash, NC Fire Department provided assistance to Horry County Fire Rescue on the call. (WBTW) (HCFR via Facebook)
  4. More pets go missing during the 4th of July weekend than any other day of the year, and local shelters expect to see an influx of animals this weekend. The folks at the Humane Society of North Myrtle Beach are urging pet owners to keep a watchful eye on their pets this weekend. Dogs will run away due to fireworks, and their fear can be exacerbated if they are staying with a sitter or in an unfamiliar environment. Shelters are at capacity and overcrowded already, so the situation is not ideal for taking in extra animals. (wpde.com)
  5. Myrtle Beach city councilman John Krajc was cited for reckless driving earlier this week. Krajc, who has served on the council since 2019, says he was defending his home, and was trying to help the police apprehend suspects who tossed fireworks from a moving vehicle onto his front yard. He followed that vehicle until police caught up to them. Krajc was given a citation and a fine of $439. Neither the Myrtle Beach Police Department nor the City of Myrtle Beach are providing information to the press about the incident. (WMBF)

About me: The best decision I ever made was relocating to the Myrtle Beach area from New England a few years ago, with my three dogs and three cats. I enjoy dogs, cats, road trips, photography, writing, vegetarian food, live music, bicycling and above all my daily walks on the beaches in and around the Grand Strand.
