Here are the top four stories in Myrtle Beach today:

  1. Horry County Council is gearing up to decide about three housing development proposals in Carolina Forest. The total rezoning would add fewer than 80 homes, but residents have been objecting to the expansions, citing traffic, flooding and infrastructure issues. The three projects are: 58 homes on Gardner Lacy Road; 23 home lots near West Perry Road; and 18 in-common homes on the corner of Myrtle Ridge Drive and Lakeside Crossing Drive. A fourth rezoning request for 25 patio homes near Postal Way got a thumbs' down in preliminary discussions. (Myhorrynews)
  2. North Myrtle Beach city leaders took time to visit ongoing projects under development in the west end of the city. These include a new development that is part of the NMB Sports Park expansion, a new UPS facility site, a new fire station, the Palmetto Coast industrial park, the Greenway trailhead and route, and others. The projects are adding job opportunity possibilities in town. (WMBF)
  3. The franchisee of Painter's Homemade Ice Cream in Garden City is being sued by the company's owners for violations of the franchise agreement. The lawsuit brought against Haley King accuses her of violating an agreement signed in 2019 between herself and Ann and Steve Fairchild, the pair who own the brand and operate the Highway 17 location in Murrells Inlet. The suit states that King wanted to sell unapproved products, and accuses her of deleting information about the Murrells Inlet location from social media, causing confusion for customers. Further, the suit accuses King of planning to start a competing business. The Garden City location has since been torn down to make room for parking, in an unrelated matter. King was once an employee of the company, in both locations, before becoming franchisee. (WBTW)
  4. According to a news release, Grand Strand Medical Center has announced that it has zero COVID-19 cases for the first time in 761 days. Public Relations Director, Caroline Preusser, sent out the news release on Thursday, saying in part, "Grand Strand Medical Center knows the pandemic isn't over, but is celebrating this day together to recognize the great strides made by our community to get to this point." From my notebook:

  • The Touchstone Energy Co-op Bowl is happening in December, and thefootball coaching staffs have been named for 2022. Justin Gentry of Chapin High School, and Robin Bacon of Spring Valley High School will serve as head coaches for the game, with Gentry coaching the South team and Bacon coaching the North team. The event will be December 10, at Doug Shaw Memorial Stadium. (WBTW)
  • HGTC is reporting renewed interest in its Honors Program this year. The next opportunity to apply starts April 25 and goes through May 20. Students must have certain requirements to qualify for the program, including being enrolled in either an Associate of Arts, or an Associate of Science program at HGTC. (Press Release Desk)
  • I nearly fell off my drum stool when I saw this story! Why? Because I recognized Dorothea Taylor as one of the coaches from the drumming classes I'm taking online. Who knew we are practically neighbors? Great local story about Dorothea's 58 years of keeping the beat, and how she became a tech-savvy TikTok superstar at 71! Way to go, Dorothea. (WMBF)
  • North Myrtle Beach Fire Rescue: Just a friendly reminder, when you see emergency and service vehicles on the side of the road, MOVE OVER! It can save a life! (Facebook)
  • Myrtle Beach prospective homebuyers: are you wondering what's on the market? Here is what the most recently listed homes in and around Myrtle Beach have to offer. (Myrtle Beach Patch)
  • If you're into video games, you might be interested to know that Sonic the Hedgehog is the most popular video game character in South Carolina and in the United States! By looking at characters from best-selling home video games sold in the 1980s and 1990s, and using Google Trends to figure out which characters were the most popular, GetWindstream compiled the list by state, based on search volume. Sonic had an edge, though — the hedgehog is featured in a 2020 movie, and a Sonic sequel is coming out this year. Check out the map to find out your favorite states, and favorite characters, and how they match up. (GetWindstream.com)

Alrighty, you're all good for Friday, everyone! I'll see you soon for another edition of the Myrtle Beach Daily.

Kathy Mandell

About me: The best decision I ever made was relocating to the Myrtle Beach area from New England a few years ago, with my three dogs and three cats. I enjoy dogs, cats, road trips, photography, writing, vegetarian food, live music, bicycling and above all my daily walks on the beaches in and around the Grand Strand.
