Here are the top five stories in Myrtle Beach today:
- The City of Myrtle Beach purchased four downtown motels in December, and demolitions of those properties are set to begin this month. The $15 million purchase consisted of four motel properties between Kings Highway and Ocean Boulevard, near 7th Avenue North. The properties are now vacant, and cordoned off to protect against squatters. Prior to the purchase, the properties were a source of many law enforcement issues. Tourists have been seen walking around in the area — something that rarely occurred when the properties were in active use. The four buildings should be completely demolished this summer. (WBTW)
- Several local church congregations participated in a clean-up of the Burgess Community near Blackmoor Golf Club in Murrells Inlet on Saturday. The effort uncovered a lot of Horry County history, and honored descendants of former slaves. The golf course abuts the final resting place for dozens of Horry County residents who were alive during the Civil War era. Most of the graves in the fenced-off area near the golf course date back to plantations that once dotted the Waccamaw River in that location. The three cemeteries were cleaned by the church members as a spring-clean-up effort, and they plan to remain involved so that the cemeteries will not be neglected anymore. (wpde.com)
- A Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania man was arrested Thursday and charged with attempted murder for a stabbing that occurred in September. The stabbing victim told Myrtle Beach Police he was stabbed multiple times while he was helping the suspect start his car. The suspect, Demarco Lavelle Jackson of Pennsylvania, put the car in reverse and sped backwards, according to the arrest warrant. Then, he exited the vehicle and stabbed the victim in the chest multiple times. Jackson was booked into the Myrtle Beach Jail. The victim had been hospitalized with the injuries, and identified Jackson via a photo lineup. (WBTW)
- Myrtle Beach Police say they were called to Sudz Car Wash on Highway 544 Wednesday night regarding a robbery in progress. The victim of the robbery was selling truck tires valued at $2,500, which he had listed for sale online. When he arrived at the designated meeting place the seller and buyer had agreed on (Sudz Car Wash), several people wearing ski masks emerged from the woods, stole the tires and left. One suspect was armed with a firearm. The person was eventually located and arrested. MBPD wants to remind people that there are designated safe zones in the city for conducting internet transactions: the parking area of Collins Law Enforcement Center along Mr. Joe White Avenue is one of the safe zones. It is monitored 24/7 including camera surveillance. (WMBF)
- The return of the Myrtle Beach Food Truck Festival after a two-year absence is a big hit, and continues Sunday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Burroughs and Chapin Pavilion Place. Vendors have come from far and wide, and local vendors are also participating. The free event includes live music, beverages, games for kids, and of course, FOOD! (wpde.com)

About me: The best decision I ever made was relocating to the Myrtle Beach area from New England a few years ago, with my three dogs and three cats. I enjoy dogs, cats, road trips, photography, writing, vegetarian food, live music, bicycling and above all my daily walks on the beaches in and around the Grand Strand.
