Shoutout to the awesome local business that keeps this newsletter running:
Thinking of a move to the Myrtle Beach area, but don't know where to start? What if we could connect you with a real estate agent that not only has over 100 5-star reviews on Zillow — but has lived through a relocation herself and understands the process well. Val Lyons at Realty One Group knows that details matter. If you're downsizing, relocating, or curious about home taxes in a new area, Val knows the market and understands communication is key. Here are the top four stories in Myrtle Beach today:
- More than 40,000 South Carolina residents cast their ballots on the first day of early voting in the state on Monday. The record-setting turnout doubled the previous early voting record set in June. Increased traffic to the SC State Election Commission website caused the site to crash Monday morning! - Another lucky Myrtle Beach shopper scored a $1 million winning Powerball ticket. The winning ticket holder matched all five numbers, but didn't get the Powerball. The ticket was purchased at Kroger on Renee Drive in Myrtle Beach. The Powerball jackpot was hovering around $625 million for Monday night's drawing. (WMBF)
- South Carolina didn't make WalletHub's 2022 Best Places For Halloween list at all, even though the city of Conway changed its name to "Halloween" for the month of October! Conway is famous for its ghost tours and other events including Carrie the Musical playing at Theatre of the Republic. There are plenty of spooky things happening around the Grand Strand during Halloween week! The city of Loris has at least one spooky attraction of its own: "Your Worst Nightmare," a haunted house attraction near Broad Street. (WMBF) Carolina Forest has the Oakbury haunted house built in the driveway of the Dorenbos family. The 100-yards-long "house" is open to the public and all proceeds will go to breast cancer research. (WMBF) My personal favorite is the Spook-tacular Night of Halloween on the MarshWalk! Just sitting and costume-watching as people parade by along the famous waterfront is something to behold! The fun starts at 5 p.m. on October 31! (MarshWalk.com)
- Here are two good-news school stories that should brighten everyone's day. When word got out that some students at Carolina Forest Elementary school had outstanding school meal balances and would receive "alternative meals" until those amounts were paid, the community sprang into action. "Children shouldn't have to worry about this kind of stuff" is part of one social media post that went viral within the community. That post was shared by dozens of people and donations started pouring in from all over the area. (wpde.com) Meanwhile, over in Conway, crews finally broke ground on the new Whittemore Park Middle School Monday afternoon. The new school is being built at 500 El Bethel Road and will house about 1,000 students when it is completed in 2024. (WMBF)

From my notebook:
- I had the opportunity to stop by Kind Keeper Animal Rescue's fall festival this past weekend. The shelter has been steadily raising funds to build a new facility on 10 acres of land it owns in Longs. With the money they raised last weekend, they are one step closer to breaking ground on the project. Shelter management hopes to start building in early 2023. (wpde.com)
- Businesses all around the Myrtle Beach area are searching for new employees. Whether you're looking for full-time, part-time or temporary work you can find just about any type of job on this list compiled by Patch and ZipRecruiter. (Myrtle Beach Patch)
- Louisiana-based Walk-On's Sports Bistreaux opened a second Grand Strand location in Surfside Beach on Monday. The restaurant is at 101 N. Strand Parkway, across from Target. There is also a Walk-On's in Carolina Forest. (WBTW)
- House of Blues Myrtle Beach: "JUST ANNOUNCED 🌹 Nightrain – The Guns N' Roses Tribute Experience is coming to House of Blues Myrtle Beach Dec. 28! Tickets on sale Wednesday at 10am! 🌹" (House of Blues Myrtle Beach via Instagram)
- Did you know? Myrtle Beach High School's football team has a female linebacker. Justice Cisco has wanted to play football since middle school when she asked her mother if she could try out for the team. Justice says this is what she loves to do, and that her tenacity to get back up when she's knocked down spills over into her life on and off the field. (wpde.com)
- Here we go again! In preparation for the weekend, here's a handy list of things happening in and around town: Myrtle Beach Convention Center hosts Special Olympic South Carolina State Fall Games October 28 and 29. Fall Craft Fair at American Legion Post 179 in Murrells Inlet, Saturday, October 29 starting at 9 a.m. North Myrtle Beach Rescue Squad's annual Fish Fry & Barbecue Fundraiser at Ocean Drive Elementary School Saturday starting at 11 a.m. Cost $15. About me: The best decision I ever made was relocating to the Myrtle Beach area from New England a few years ago, with my three dogs and three cats. I enjoy dogs, cats, road trips, photography, writing, vegetarian food, live music, bicycling and above all my daily walks on the beaches in and around the Grand Strand.
