Here are the top four stories in Myrtle Beach today:
- Workers at Eggs Up Grill in Carolina Forest used LifeVac to save a woman who was choking and lost consciousness at the restaurant. The employees jumped into action without a second thought. The woman was not able to stand up and was "deadweight" so it was not possible to initiate the Heimlich Maneuver. Manager Ruth Waibel grabbed the LifeVac device that's kept on-site and the coworkers were able to remove a piece of food that was lodged in the woman's throat. The woman regained consciousness, talked to the staff and told them she felt a little dizzy. (WBTW)
- Myrtle Beach Police arrested a man accused of showing a firearm to a Home Depot employee and demanding money on Friday afternoon. Officers used traffic cameras to identify the vehicle the 61-year-old man used, then circulated photos of the vehicle and the man on social media. Tips were received that led to the arrest of David Brian Plump at his home on Friday evening. Plump is charged with armed robbery and is awaiting a bond hearing. He is in custody at Myrtle Beach Jail. (WMBF)
- All around the U.S., dogs and cats are being surrendered to shelters in record numbers. Grand Strand Humane Society says the most common reason here on the Grand Strand is a lack of affordable pet-friendly housing. Another reason is the inability to pay for veterinary care, leading people to abandon injured or sick animals at area shelters instead of surrendering them correctly. The shelter has 110 cats in its shelter and another 130 cats in foster care. GSHS is looking for more volunteers and foster families. Another way to help out is to give monetary donations — they even have a critical care fund set up to pay for medical costs for wounded animals. (wpde.com)
- Horry County Schools posted a Welcome Back message from HCS Superintendent, Dr. Rick Maxey on its Facebook page. The 2022-23 academic year starts Mo day, August 15, here in Horry County! (Horry County Schools via Facebook)
Myrtle Beach pic of the day:

From my notebook:
- News13's Pet of the Weekend is Rolando, a one-year-old mixed breed dog available for adoption from Grand Strand Humane Society. Rolando reportedly loves everybody and really enjoys walks and car rides. Hopefully Rolando will find a home before the shelter's 50th anniversary gala and fundraiser, scheduled for the evening of September 9 at Dune Golf and Beach Club. The gala proceeds will fund a new permanent shelter for the GSHS so they will no longer need to use the two current temporary facilities on Mr. Joe White Avenue and at Tanger Outlets in Conway. (WBTW)
- Mid-week, we reported that Horry County Animal Care Center had adopted 55 animals from its overcrowded facilities with the help of Tamroc Kennels. The shelter announced in an update that 100 animals were adopted this week! Even with that many adoptions, the facility is still over-capacity. A group of beagles and hounds taken in as part of an animal neglect case will be available for adoption starting Monday. (WMBF) (wpde.com)
- Some of the adult animals at Kind Keeper Animal Rescue are being adopted for half-off the regular fees. These are animals who have been at the shelter for extended periods of time and desperately need a home. Kind Keeper also announced its Fall Festival happening October 22 and 23 on Watertower Road in Longs. The rescue is in need of vendors for the two-day event. (WFXB)
- Myrtle Beach Area Chamber Of Commerce has named Downwind Sails Watersports as August's Leading Business Of The Month. The award, sponsored by South State Bank, was given to the business on August 9. Downwind Sails has been in business over 40 years and is of course locally owned and operated. From parasailing to banana boats, sailboats, paddle boards and jet skis, Downwind Sails has your water sports needs covered. (Press Release Desk)
- Main Stage VIP tickets for the 2023 Carolina Country Music Festival sold out quickly on Friday after Miranda Lambert was announced as a headliner of the four-day festival. General admission tickets are available. The festival still has two more headline acts to be announced. (wpde.com)
Now you're in the loop and ready to start this Sunday off right! I'll see you Monday to kick off a new week in Myrtle Beach. Remember: the first day of school in our community is Monday — drive safely and bring along an extra dose of patience!

About me: The best decision I ever made was relocating to the Myrtle Beach area from New England a few years ago, with my three dogs and three cats. I enjoy dogs, cats, road trips, photography, writing, vegetarian food, live music, bicycling and above all my daily walks on the beaches in and around the Grand Strand.
