Here are the top five stories today in Myrtle Beach:
- Readers who have been asking for news on the Enterprise Road bridge repairs will be pleased to learn of an update. The bridge has been shut down since December when a truck hit the bridge. The closure has caused headaches for residents of the Enterprise neighborhood in Socastee, and boaters at Osprey Marina. Repair work is set to be completed by late June at which time the bridge should reopen. (WMBF)
- Three motorcycle deaths have been recorded by Horry County in the last several days. A North Carolina man was not wearing a helmet when he was involved in a crash on Highway 17 and Maryport Drive. On Friday, there were two more motorcycle deaths, one on George Bishop Parkway, and another near Jacob Lane. All three crashes are being investigated by state police. (wpde.com)
- Current Horry County School enrollment has surpassed pre-pandemic levels. That has school district leaders budgeting for additional students for the upcoming academic year. School leaders say the higher enrollment is directly related to the population surge in Horry County as more people move to the Myrtle Beach area. Twenty percent of the HCS population lives in Carolina Forest, but leaders are also seeing growth in North Myrtle Beach and Conway. Registration for the 2022-2023 academic year is now open. (WBTW)
- Speaking of pre-pandemic levels, it appears that Myrtle Beach's April hotel occupancy rates dropped to 2019 levels. That's according to the Myrtle Beach Area Chamber of Commerce, whose CEO says it's not worrisome, and was more or less expected to happen. That's because there was an excess of visitors coming to the Grand Strand as an alternative to their regular vacation destinations. (WBTW)
- It's hard to believe Memorial Day weekend is almost here. Myrtle Beach PD is preparing for the unofficial start of summer, and wants to spread the word that there will be traffic pattern changes in various areas. Ocean Boulevard will be a one-way road for non-emergency vehicles. Several residential roads will be closed off or marked with barriers and signage beginning May 27. Businesses are gearing up for the influx of visitors and expect to see a boost that will keep them thriving all summer long. (WMBF)

From my notebook:
- News13's Pets of the Weekend are the bonded pair Samson and Delilah. I've been following these two for quite a while, and it would make my day if they could find a person or family to love them. Samson is a mixed breed, three years old, and Delilah is a hound of about six years old. The pair must be adopted together, and you can do that through Grand Strand Humane Society. (WBTW)
- Friday was National Rescue Dog Day, but that doesn't mean every day can't be devoted to rescue dogs. The folks at Grand Strand Humane Society hope to find forever homes for as many pooches as possible. Right now they have 70 dogs needing homes, and some of them have been at the shelter a very long time. (wpde.com)
- Up the road a ways, the Humane Society of North Myrtle Beach is in need of homes for cats, and they are calling all cat lovers! HSNMB received an intake of 28 kittens on Friday. 🙀 Kitten season officially exploded on the shelter adding more needy felines to the shelter's 70 cats that were already in residence. (Facebook)
- The Myrtle Beach Area Chamber Of Commerce welcomed new Grand Strand Young Professionals members this week. (Press Release Desk) The MBACC will host a Workforce & Talent Development Forum at Horry-Georgetown Technical College in Conway starting at 8:30 a.m. on Tuesday, May 24. (MyrtleBeachAreaChamber.com)
- Horry Georgetown Technical College's class of 2022 graduated this month. Graduates ranged in age from 16 years old to 75, and came from states including Montana and Maine. Congratulations to all the graduates! (Press Release Desk)
- Sea Haven, the youth crisis center in Little River, received a $50,000 grant that enabled the nonprofit to purchase a new van to help with youth outreach in Horry County. The van is also stocked with tools, laptops, medical supplies, food, literature and more. (WMBF)

About me: The best decision I ever made was relocating to the Myrtle Beach area from New England a few years ago, with my three dogs and three cats. I enjoy dogs, cats, road trips, photography, writing, vegetarian food, live music, bicycling and above all my daily walks on the beaches in and around the Grand Strand.
