Here are the top five stories today in Myrtle Beach:
- In a lawsuit, a former Horry County Schools spokesperson claims she was fired for 'truthfully' revealing project information. Teal Britton says she was gradually forced out of her position with the school district after giving the media information about construction projects. The district could not be reached for comment. (WBTW)
- When Carolina Country Music Fest asked the community to recommend someone in Horry County to be recognized on Random Act of Kindness Day, the name Doug Soles kept coming up. The Carolina Forest High School vice principal was gifted with CCMF passes to recognize how much he does for others all year long. Soles is currently dealing with cancer, and he loves country music. - Conway native, Vanessa Wyche, will deliver the keynote address at Coastal Carolina University's spring graduation ceremony. Wyche got her masters degree in bioengineering from Clemson University. She is the director of NASA's Johnson Space Center. Graduation is scheduled for May 7th. (WBTW)
- Residents point to recycling education as one way to avoid the expansion of the landfill on Highway 90 in Horry County. The Solid Waste Authority says there is a need to expand the landfill that is regularly at capacity. The proposal would raise the height of the landfill to 284 feet. Currently, the landfill stands at 70 - 80 feet high. It is the only landfill in Horry County. The Solid Waste Authority is holding another meeting on Tuesday, February 22nd. (WMBF)
- In case you missed his announcement in November, Governor McMaster supports free technical college. The Gov pushed his proposed $124 million program during his visit to Myrtle Beach earlier this week where he was the keynote speaker at the South Carolina Technical Education Association annual conference. McMaster says trained workers are needed for high-demand jobs, and he's ready to pay for two years of college for students enrolled in qualified programs to see those jobs filled. (WMBF)

- With more than 50,000 arrivals and departures (each!), Myrtle Beach International Airport broke more records in January. The airport expects a very busy 2022, especially with Spirit Airlines resuming paused flights, and Avelo Airlines adding new service to MYR in the summer. When the airport is busy, so are ride-sharing drivers, due to the trickle-down effect. (WBTW)
- In two recent press releases from the Myrtle Beach Area Chamber Of Commerce, it was announced that Santee Cooper has been awarded February Leading Business Of The Month, sponsored by South State Bank (Press Release Desk) and The Blood Connection was named February Nonprofit Of The Month, sponsored by South Atlantic Bank. (Press Release Desk)
- You may be familiar with the StoryWalk boards all along the lake at Grand Park in Market Common. The pedestals are strategically placed along the path so that families walking there can stop and read the children's stories. A second StoryWalk is going to be built in Myrtle Beach near the north end of the city, around 62nd Avenue North. StoryWalk promotes literacy while getting outdoors and moving (described as physical literacy). (MyHorryNews.com)

About me: The best decision I ever made was relocating to the Myrtle Beach area from New England a few years ago, with my three dogs and three cats. I enjoy dogs, cats, road trips, photography, writing, vegetarian food, live music, bicycling and above all my daily walks on the beaches in and around the Grand Strand.
