Here are the top stories in Myrtle Beach today:
- The story of 37-year-old former Chadbourn, NC police chief who went missing a couple days ago took over the airwaves earlier this week after his vehicle and a boat were found, with a "goodbye note" inside, at a boat launch site along the Lumber River. Horry County Police received a tip, and Anthony Spivey was found on Thursday at his aunt's home in Loris, where he was arrested. He is facing dozens of criminal charges including embezzlement and mishandling evidence, among other things. (WRAL News)
- There are more updates from Myrtle Beach city leaders after their budget retreat held on Thursday in Pinopolis. One project is the creation of downtown 'municipal improvement district'. (WBTW) The leaders were also presented with a plan to hire 71 new city workers, including 50 police officers, starting in July. (WBTW)
- A pedestrian was hit and killed by a tractor-trailer on Highway 501 in the wee hours of Thursday morning. The crash occurred near Waccamaw Boulevard where 37-year-old Ricky Dale Wallace, Jr. was walking. The deputy coroner identified the man on Thursday. SC Highway Patrol is conducting an investigation. The tractor-trailer driver was not injured. (WMBF)
- Congestion at Cherry Grove boat landing took center stage at a North Myrtle Beach city leaders' workshop this week. Plans to cure the overcrowding of the boat ramp could cost around $400K for renovations. A tentative plan is to create two launching areas for kayakers: one area for recreational kayakers, and another for commercial kayaking companies to use for their groups. There could also be a paid parking lot for non-residents, and a limit to the number of commercial companies using the boat launch. Plans need to go before city council for a vote, so right now nothing is set in stone. (WMBF)
- Horry County Schools will discontinue COVID-19 protocols, in accordance with updated SCDHEC guidelines. The district will end contact tracing, quarantines, and its test-to-stay program, beginning immediately. The only protocol remaining will be if students test positive, they will have to isolate at home for five days, return to school on day six as long as they have no symptoms, but wear a mask during days six through ten. (WBTW)

From my notebook:
- A dog abandoned in Georgetown during Hurricane Dorian in 2019 is still in the St. Frances Animal Care Center. The three-and-an-half-year-old female dog named "Surge," is sitting in the shelter, waiting for a home. She is a sweet-natured, laid-back girl and loves to go to the beach. She does well with kids and other dogs, but would be best in a home without cats. The reason she's been overlooked is because she gets really stressed out in the shelter environment when all the barking starts. If you're looking for the perfect furry girlfriend, Surge is waiting for you! (WBTW)
- Surfside Beach's "goose whisperer" says she will never give up on finding ways to protect the Canada geese in town. A national goose coalition agrees with her, and they both want changes ASAP to protect the feathered species. The group wants accommodations such as a wildlife expert and educational meetings for local homeowners. There have been some reports of humans trying to chase the birds away using harmful methods. (wpde.com)
- Myrtle Beach musicians have come together to raise money for a mobile recording studio. Local artist, Swani Love, started singing publicly not that long ago, and considers her voice "mediocre," but she managed to get the confidence to start singing, and wants other young people to learn how to get confident. She wants to take the mobile unit across the U.S. and let kids use the mobile studio for free. (Myhorrynews)
- Local restaurant owners are sounding the alarm that high gas prices are creating a trickle-down of challenges. There are problems hiring workers, getting supplies, and they could soon see fewer people willing to go out to eat at a restaurant. (wpde.com)
- Former County Council Chairman, Mark Lazarus, has thrown his hat into the ring, and is running for Horry County Council Chairman again! He should be formally announcing his candidacy soon, and is planning a campaign kickoff on March 10th. (WMBF)

About me: The best decision I ever made was relocating to the Myrtle Beach area from New England a few years ago, with my three dogs and three cats. I enjoy dogs, cats, road trips, photography, writing, vegetarian food, live music, bicycling and above all my daily walks on the beaches in and around the Grand Strand.
