Fallen Officer Honored + CCU Students Arrive + Open Carry Begins
Here's the latest edition the Myrtle Beach Daily! Here's your five-minute guide to all things going on in town.

Good morning, Myrtle Beach! Here's everything you need to know to get this Sunday started off right. Today I'll tell you about the re-naming of a street in honor of a fallen officer, CCU freshman students have moved in, the Red Cross says it will have a mask rule at hurricane shelters, McLeod Health expands access to monoclonal antibody treatment for certain COVID-19 patients, and the new Open Carry With Training Act begins today in South Carolina.
First, today's weather: Scattered thunderstorms. . High: 85 Low: 76.
Here are the top stories in Myrtle Beach today:
- The City of Myrtle Beach has renamed a street near Market Common station after officer Joe McGarry. 28-year-old PFC McGarry was killed in the line of duty in 2002 while approaching a man wanted for murder. McGarry was shot and killed by the suspect who is now in prison on death row. (wpde.com)
- Coastal Carolina University freshmen students moved in on Friday, and the university is expecting this year's freshmen to be its largest in the history of the school. Students chose the school for its proximity to the beach, but also because of its well-known football team and other sporting events. Classes start on Wednesday. (WBTW)
- The American Red Cross has announced that it will require masks in hurricane shelters this year, even for people who are fully vaccinated. The mask requirement will apply to all staff, clients, and volunteers. For people who are physically unable to wear a mask, there will be special mask-free sections in shelters. Vaccinations will not be required. (WMBF)
- McLeod Health is expanding access to monoclonal antibody treatments for some COVID-19 patients at its medical center in Florence. The treatment attacks the spike protein that causes the virus, neutralizing the protein and reducing the spread of the virus in the body. This, in turn, reduces symptoms. For now, treatment is reserved for symptomatic patients who risk severe disease such as elderly or those with a comorbidity like high blood pressure. (WBTW)
- Governor McMaster fired some guns at a shooting range in Greenville on Friday to commemorate his signing into law the state's Open Carry With Training Act. The bill goes into effect today, and allows residents with concealed weapons permits to openly carry firearms. People must also pass training and background checks to get a concealed weapons permit. The law does not change who can carry a firearm, it changes the way a permit holder can carry a handgun in public in South Carolina. (WPDE)

About me: The best decision I ever made was relocating to the Myrtle Beach area from New England a few years ago, with my three dogs and three cats. I enjoy dogs, cats, road trips, photography, writing, vegetarian food, live music, bicycling and above all my daily walks on the beaches in and around the Grand Strand.
