Here are the top stories today in Myrtle Beach:
- The family of Tristan Vereen, the 33-year-old father of four who was shot by a South Carolina trooper on September 11th, says Vereen was unarmed and they want answers and accountability. Vereen was stopped for a broken windshield, and allegedly bit the officer and then used the officer's taser on the officer before the officer shot him. Solicitor Jimmy Richardson separately held a news conference where he explained that he watched a neighbor's surveillance video of the shooting with Vereen's family. Richardson says the SLED investigation is going to be a lengthy process. (wpde.com)
- We locals know it's beautiful, but apparently others have been let in on our secret after huge revenues were generated from visitors at Myrtle Beach State Park during pandemic restrictions. The seaside attraction, and its nearby neighbor, Huntington Beach State Park, saw more visitors than ever since the start of COVID-19, setting records along with the rest of South Carolina's State Parks — to the tune of $45 million in revenue for the fiscal year. SC Parks Recreation and Tourism leaders call it very successful, and said they had to close some parks early on a number of days due to reaching full capacity. (WBTW)
- In the continuing Carolina Forest growth story, the area's Community Church is planning expansion projects of its own. CF Community Church has 25 acres in the neighborhood, and Pastor Tyler Edwards indicated that trees are being cleared on the property to make way for six projects including church renovations, a gym, a dormitory, and an addiction center. - A lawsuit pertaining to a condo fire that occurred in Carolina Forest in 2018, leaving over a dozen people displaced, has ended in a settlement being reached. Affected residents, some of whom had to jump from their condo balconies, sustaining injuries, filed a suit against the Windsor Green Owners Association, stating that a bird's nest inside a light fixture sparked the fire that began in a shared hallway. An earlier fire, in 2013, had resulted in 26 buildings in the complex being destroyed, and safety measures being questioned. The settlement totals $10 million. (MyHorryNews.com)
- A woman diagnosed with a rare cervical cancer for the second time is getting some fundraising help from her high school sweetheart after her family's GoFundMe page and the woman's insurance weren't generating enough money to cover her medical costs. Mateo Montalvo, who met Haley Smith in high school, has been doing car detailing for the past few months, and giving all the money to Smith and her family for medical costs that include an aggressive chemotherapy treatment. About me: The best decision I ever made was relocating to the Myrtle Beach area from New England a few years ago, with my three dogs and three cats. I enjoy dogs, cats, road trips, photography, writing, vegetarian food, live music, bicycling and above all my daily walks on the beaches in and around the Grand Strand.
