Here are the top five stories in Myrtle Beach today:
- A multi-unit apartment fire in the River Oaks area of Carolina Forest displaced 19 residents and damaged three units. First responders arrived at the scene of the two-alarm blaze around 1:35 a.m. on White River Drive. The fire was under control about two hours later. One nine-unit building sustained significant damage and two other buildings in the complex were damaged by heat. The American Red Cross is helping the 19 displaced people. The cause of the blaze is still under investigation. (wpde.com) A second residential fire in Carolina Forest happened a few hours later at 5:30 a.m. on Emerson Drive. That fire only damaged the outside of the dwelling — there was no interior damage and no injuries were reported. The second fire is also being investigated. (WMBF)
- Hotels and restaurants are still busy as we sail into the first weekend of fall, and there is no sign of things slowing down. A TripAdvisor study ranked Myrtle Beach as number 8 on its Top 10 list of top U.S. fall travel destinations. With the pleasant climate here, free beach-going, golf and other outdoor activities and of course all the festivals, Myrtle Beach is hoppin'! Myrtle Beach Area Chamber of Commerce and the Convention and Visitors Bureau show that bookings for the next 60 days are 11 points ahead of 2019, and one point behind 2021. (WMBF)
- Horry County Police have released photographs of a vehicle involved in a shooting in Socastee and they're seeking the public's help in locating that car. The shooting happened Thursday at a car wash. The victim was taken to the hospital with serious injuries. Anyone with information should call (843) 915-8477. (wpde.com)
- The long-time owners of a well-known downtown motel claim they were bullied into selling their property to the city of Myrtle Beach. The city says it used eminent domain to acquire the properties for fair market value. Six properties were purchased by the city for just over $8 million as part of its downtown redevelopment project. Five of those properties, including the Midtown Inn, are owned by the Doyle family who claim they were brought into the process late in 2021 and were "adamant" about not selling. There are no definite plans for the use of the property once the sale goes through, but when it does close, the Doyles will no longer own the properties. Stay tuned for the outcome of this ongoing situation. (Myhorrynews)
- The city of Myrtle Beach received an Arbor Day Foundation grant and gave away 400 trees to the community this week. The tree giveaway happened at Myrtle's Market and was sponsored in part by Meritage Homes. Some of the trees given away were red maples. Organizers made sure homeowners got the right info and tools to help them plant their new trees. (WMBF)

About me: The best decision I ever made was relocating to the Myrtle Beach area from New England a few years ago, with my three dogs and three cats. I enjoy dogs, cats, road trips, photography, writing, vegetarian food, live music, bicycling and above all my daily walks on the beaches in and around the Grand Strand.
