Here are the top five stories in Myrtle Beach today:

  1. A fire weather watch has been issued for the Grand Strand and surrounding area all day Saturday. The watch means that conditions are favorable for rapid and unpredictable spread of wildfires. Even though we had significant rain this week, the low humidity and gusty winds create a perfect setup for wildfire risk. Humidity levels are expected to go as low as 20%, and wind gusts could be up to 40 mph. The watch may be upgraded to a red flag warning. Authorities are advising against outdoor burning on Saturday. (WMBF)
  2. As of the time of this posting, a boil water notice was in effect for 'restaurant row' in Myrtle Beach. The precautionary measure was taken due to a leak in an 8-inch water main north of the city limits. Residents from 302-414 Kingston Road, 300-304 Caroline Circle, 10100 Shore Drive, and 9994 Beach Drive were advised to boil water used for drinking, cooking, ice making, brushing teeth, or washing dishes. Once repaired, the advisory will be lifted. Repairs usually are successful within 48 hours. (WBTW)
  3. Congressman Tom Rice (R-SC) and 33 other legislators have signed on to co-sponsor a bill that would prevent schools that allow transgender participation in sports from receiving federal funds. Rice and others signed the 'Protection of Women and Girls in Sports Act' this week. The legislation, if approved, would require school athletics to comply with Title IX recognition of an individual's reproductive biology and genetics at birth. (WMBF)
  4. The U.S. government is planning to auction off wind energy power production rights in two local areas: 50 miles off the coast of Myrtle Beach, and 30 miles south of Bald Head Island in North Carolina. The Department of the Interior says there is a 110,000+ acre lease area called the Carolina Long Bay area that, if developed, could produce 1.3 gigawatts of offshore wind energy. The sites will be put up for auction on May 11. (wpde.com)
  5. Authorities in North Myrtle Beach are conducting an investigation after wallets, phones and other items were stolen from the men's locker room at NMB Aquatic Center. The city said that the thieves cut a number of locks on lockers at the fitness center. There was a similar situation at another gym in the area this week as well. (WMBF)

From my notebook:

  • Here we are on Saturday, and Tidelands Health has reported that, since its announcement of zero COVID on Monday, they still have not had any COVID-19 hospitalizations. Critical care director, Dr. Nathan Mattox said seeing that number hit zero was "like Christmas all over again". The health network is being cautiously optimistic, while giving staffers some well-deserved and long overdue relaxation time. Nearby McLeod Health also hit zero COVID hospitalizations, as did other hospitals in South Carolina. (WMBF) (wpde.com)
  • The directors of the nonprofit group, Helping Footprint, are asking for help for one of their own. Two brothers started the organization a few years ago to help community members in need. They've raised over $20,000 for the community, but now their own family is on the other side of that equation. The Winfield family's 9-year-old son, Grayson, has been diagnosed with high-functioning autism and needs a trained service animal in order to return to in-person classroom learning. The Winfields want to train the family dog, Winterbelle, to become a certified service dog for Grayson. It will cost about $10,000 to train the dog, and the family is seeking donations. (WBTW)
  • Waccamaw Market Cooperative wants you to know it's almost farmers market season. The co-op manages seven farmers markets in Horry and Georgetown Counties, where you can buy produce, ready-to-eat foods, crafts, and more from local vendors. The first market to start up again will be in Valor Park, on April 2 at 10 a.m.(wpde.com)
  • Holiday Inn Club Vacations has acquired 16 acres of land along Ocean Boulevard in Myrtle Beach, to build a new resort there. The 152-room facility will be located between Damon's Restaurant and the DoubleTree Hilton Resort. All rooms will have an ocean view, and the resort will have direct access to the beach. The anticipated opening date is 2024. (WBTW)
  • Myrtle Beach Fire Department will be using federal funds to fill critical paramedic positions, thanks to the American Rescue Plan (ARPA) funds that Governor McMaster earmarked for tech school training and continuing education. The department is in desperate need for paramedics — they need 30, but only have 19 right now. (WMBF)
  • The owner of Beach Beads & More in Surfside donated some handmade jewelry to an online auction to raise funds for the Wild Things Freedom Center wildlife sanctuary in Georgetown County. All the construction on the Grand Strand has impacted wildlife significantly, and the money will help the sanctuary care for wild animals that are injured or in need. The online auction goes through April 2nd. (wpde.com)

Kathy Mandell

About me: The best decision I ever made was relocating to the Myrtle Beach area from New England a few years ago, with my three dogs and three cats. I enjoy dogs, cats, road trips, photography, writing, vegetarian food, live music, bicycling and above all my daily walks on the beaches in and around the Grand Strand.
