🌱 First Avelo Flight Lands At MYR + Dead Ducks Pose No Public Threat

The quickest way to get caught up on the most important things happening today in Myrtle Beach.

(Patch Media)

Good morning, people of the Grand Strand! It's me again, Kathy Mandell, your host of the Myrtle Beach Daily. Today is Friday, May 6, 2022 and here's what's going on as we head into Mother's Day Weekend!

A look at Friday's weather:

A t-storm around in the p.m.. High: 84 Low: 67.

Here are the top five stories today in Myrtle Beach:

  1. The first Avelo Airlines arrival from New Haven, Connecticut landed at MYR Thursday morning. There was an inaugural ceremony, a water cannon salute, and a ribbon-cutting ceremony after the plane touched down. Avelo is going to operate the non-stop flights year-round, daily except for Wednesdays. This makes ten airlines that serve Myrtle Beach International Airport. (WMBF)
  2. Legally innocent defendants incarcerated before their trials in Horry County can't always afford to pay bail. The County's F.R.E.E. Bail Fund hopes to help them out. Significant hardships can cascade during incarceration such as losing an apartment because rent isn't paid, losing all one's possessions or losing a job. The fund was started by Coastal Carolina University sociology professor Jennifer Schlosser and local activist Dameion Fowler, who was killed while biking to work this past February. Schlosser is continuing the work in Fowler's honor. (Myhorrynews)
  3. "Hate has no place here" says the Horry County police department after a rash of anti-Semitic, conspiracy theory notes were left in various places throughout the Grand Strand. The department says there is no direct local threat related to the printed notes that were distributed inside baggies weighted down with hard candies. The notes suggest conspiracy theories related to Jewish government officials and the pandemic. Anyone with information or if you see suspicious activity, be sure to report it to your local police or HCPD. (WMBF)
  4. It seems no one is exempt from shortages of one kind or another. Local HVAC companies are now experiencing shortages of ductwork supplies. Flexible duct is the most difficult product to find right now, and HVAC business owners are saying they've never seen anything like this before. Suppliers are starting to limit how much duct materials each business or contractor can receive, in order to prevent anyone from buying it all. New builds are impacted the most — a new home needs a great deal of ductwork material for completion, and the daily allotment limits don't give contractors enough to finish one house, let alone several. (WBTW)
  5. South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control has announced that there is no threat to public health after a group of ducks that recently died in Socastee at an apartment complex were tested. The apartment complex had no comment for reporters, and results of the tests conducted by Clemson University were not available. (WMBF)

From my notebook:

  • A unique fundraiser for the hungry is happening Saturday, May 7 at Avista Resort in North Myrtle Beach. About 90 thrill seekers who were able to raise a minimum of $1,000 each to be able to participate will "go over the edge" of the 164-foot building! It's all for a good cause, and rappelling equipment will be used. Proceeds will go to New Directions. The event is run by Over The Edge, a company that does these charity events all over the U.S. (wpde.com)
  • Myrtle Beach Pelicans: The Chicago Cubs have announced a pair of Pelicans as the organization's minor league players of the month! Congratulations to Porter Hodge (17.1 IP, 1.56 ERA, 0.92 WHIP, 6 BB, 21 H) and Pete Crow-Armstrong (.375 AVG, 3 HR, 13 RBI, 1.083 OPS, 7 SB) (Facebook)
  • Now hiring! Myrtle Waves is looking to hire more lifeguards before the summer season. The popular water park opens in two weeks and still needs admissions, concessions and lifeguard employees. (WMBF)
  • North Myrtle Beach gymnast Lanie Stone has qualified for a national championship in Mesa, Arizona. Stone is one of four level 10 gymnasts from South Carolina who qualified. The national championship is hosted by USA Gymnastics. Stone was the only competitor in the Grand Strand area who qualified. The championship competition is May 15 in Mesa.(WBTW)
  • Full-time firefighters could move in as soon as the end of May at the almost-completed Longs fire station. It took two years for the new station, located on Highway 9, to be built, with supply chain issues and COVID causing delays. The community has been relying on volunteer firefighters, as well as ambulance service from other areas such as Loris, Stevens Crossroads, and Red Bluff. The new station will have its own ambulance and tanker truck. (WMBF)
  • The MBPD wants to educate the public about the ban on the Carolina squat truck modification if the bill passes. The bill would ban automobiles from having the front bumper four inches or more higher than the rear bumper. The department is beginning an education campaign as the bill is about to land on Governor McMaster's desk. The department wants to be sure everyone knows exactly what can and can't be done to vehicles. Once the bill becomes law, there's a 180-day period where education about the law takes place, and then the next 180 days after that are for issuing warnings to anyone stopped for violating the new law. The bill is effective 360 days after the governor signs. (WBTW)

About me: The best decision I ever made was relocating to the Myrtle Beach area from New England a few years ago, with my three dogs and three cats. I enjoy dogs, cats, road trips, photography, writing, vegetarian food, live music, bicycling and above all my daily walks on the beaches in and around the Grand Strand.
