Here are the top stories today in Myrtle Beach:

  1. Local high school football teams are preparing for Saturday's 2021 Touchstone Energy Cooperatives Bowl at Doug Shaw Stadium. Eighty-eight high school seniors from across the region will play in the bowl games, including Ryan Burger and Adam Randall, both of Myrtle Beach. Randall is a nominee for the 2021 South Carolina Mr. Football award that will be presented at halftime. (WMBF)
  2. A prisoner convicted for her involvement in the disappearance and apparent death of Heather Elvis in 2013 has filed an appeal with the SC Court of Appeals. Tammy C. Moorer was sentenced to 30 years in prison on kidnapping and conspiracy charges. There is no word yet on the outcome of Moorer's appeal. (WBTW)
  3. Horry County Republicans expressed skepticism of COVID-19 vaccines at a meeting this week. State Representative Tracy "Beanz" Diaz and others voiced their opposition of a jingle contest for schools promoting the shots. The GOP members claim the initiative, slated to award a $10K arts grant to the school with the most catchy jingle about the shots, uses taxpayer funding, and is inappropriate because the FDA has not yet approved the shot for kids. Diaz declared Horry County Schools will not participate in the initiative, to a round of applause. (Myhorrynews)
  4. A Federal Program issuing Housing Choice Vouchers isn't getting much interest from local landlords, according to the Housing Authority of Myrtle Beach. The department is going to have to start up a waiting list for the first time in three years, because there is such demand from potential tenants, but not enough landlords willing to accept the vouchers. (WBTW)
  5. The 16th annual International film festival started Thursday, and ends today, at the Grand 14 movie theater in Market Common. Seventy-one films will be shown from all over the world, and many different genres. The event is normally held in April, but was delayed this year because of the pandemic. Film submissions for the 2022 festival (to be held in April) will be accepted through December 27, 2021. (wpde.com)

From my notebook:

  • Have you ever wondered what the Meher Spiritual Center is? Well, wonder no more! WMBF got exclusive access to this amazing refuge from everyday life that's been lovingly taken care of for so many years that going there is like stepping back in time. Meher Baba, a spiritual master known as the Avatar of the Age, chose Myrtle Beach as his "home in the west." The 500 acres of untouched beauty located across from the Myrtle Beach Mall (near Outdoor World) was given to Baba by Elizabeth Patterson, the daughter of Simeon Chapin (of Burroughs & Chapin fame) — one of the largest landowners in Myrtle Beach. Kathy Mandell

About me: The best decision I ever made was relocating to the Myrtle Beach area from New England a few years ago, with my three dogs and three cats. I enjoy dogs, cats, road trips, photography, writing, vegetarian food, live music, bicycling and above all my daily walks on the beaches in and around the Grand Strand.
