Here are the top four stories today in Myrtle Beach:
- A fatal shooting happened in Georgetown over the weekend at a nightclub. A Conway man was killed in the shooting, and another Conway may was arrested and charged with murder. Police say the shooting happened during a verbal argument between the two men. The shooter is being held at Georgetown County Detention Center. (WMBF) (wpde.com)
- Georgetown Police Department Staff Sergeant Stephen Cribb, the subject of an officer-involved shooting that happened in July, was "justified in his use of force" said SLED in documents released this week. James Robert Frazier, 50, of Myrtle Beach was pronounced dead at the scene of the July 16 incident. Earlier that day, police had been looking for Frazier, a suspect in an armed robbery. The officer's body cam captured audio and video of the incident showing that Frazier drew a knife, threatened to kill the officer and charged at Cribb, who then shot Frazier. (wpde.com)
- Coastal Carolina University has dedicated a residence hall to former university president David DeCenzo and his wife, Theresa. David DeCenzo was president from 2007 to 2020 and was responsible for expanding the university's academic standing and enrollment numbers as well as the addition of several advanced degree programs. Terri DeCenzo, described as "former first lady of Coastal Carolina University" held the position of executive director of Women in Philanthropy and Leadership at the university. During her time in that role, CCU awarded more than $400,000 worth of financial support and scholarships. The David A. and Theresa M. DeCenzo Hall was revealed on Friday. (WBTW)
- A family of nine was shocked to find that the vacation rental they'd paid thousands of dollars for months in advance of their annual vacation was not as advertised. The family paid close to $6,000 to rent the seven-bed, ocean-view home in Garden City that was described as having loads of amenities. What they got instead was a home that appeared to be still under renovation. The dwelling also sustained damage from seven-foot King Tides that occurred the day before their scheduled arrival. The family called its experience a "vacation nightmare." Upon arrival, they discovered that key features were missing. They also found exposed wiring, cracked windows, loose railings, sharp nails in an outdoor shower, beach access steps that had been washed away, non-secured water heaters and a wide-open shed. The agency that rented the home to the family gave them $500 in compensation. (WBTW)

From my notebook:
- Blue Star Mothers of Coastal Carolina raised funds for Wreaths Across America at its annual pig roast that had been suspended for two years due to COVID-19. The event took place at the Moose Lodge in Myrtle Beach on Saturday. Close to $6,000 was raised. The money will go towards wreath placement at Florence National Cemetery in December. (wpde.com)
- Stompfest! Duplin Winery hosted its annual grape stomp as part of SeptemberFest at Barefoot Landing on Saturday. The Rose Hill, NC winery has hosted stomping events for nearly 50 years! (Myhorrynews)
- Beaches all up and down the Grand Strand held Beach Sweep clean-up events on Saturday. Almost every beach in the area got involved in the nationwide event. Volunteers picked up astonishing amounts of trash. In particular, cigarette butts are a real problem on beaches. One park ranger at Myrtle Beach State Park said 25,000 butts were picked up in a couple of hours during a similar beach clean-up event a few years ago. Picking up the trash saves wildlife like dolphins and turtles. Beach Sweep happens across the U.S. on the third Saturday in September. (WBTW)
- The City of Myrtle Beach hosted a sports clinic for aspiring young track athletes on Saturday and a special guest was on-hand giving pointers — world champ sprinter and Georgetown native Melissa Jefferson! More than a dozen kids came to the event at Doug Shaw Memorial Stadium to learn sprinting and hurdling techniques from the world title holder. (WMBF)

About me: The best decision I ever made was relocating to the Myrtle Beach area from New England a few years ago, with my three dogs and three cats. I enjoy dogs, cats, road trips, photography, writing, vegetarian food, live music, bicycling and above all my daily walks on the beaches in and around the Grand Strand.
