The quickest way to get caught up on the most important things happening today in Myrtle Beach.

(Patch Media)

Hello, neighbors! Kathy Mandell here with the Monday issue of the Myrtle Beach Daily. Today is May 16, 2022, and here's what's happening around town.

First, another summer-like weather day:

Humid; breezy in the p.m.. High: 83 Low: 67.

Here are the top four stories today in Myrtle Beach:

  1. In case you missed it: today at 2 p.m. the Georgetown County Sheriff's office will hold a news conference to address "recent law enforcement activity" in the county. Some of the local news channels will broadcast the conference live on TV and on their websites. (WMBF)
  2. The Blessing of the Bikes happened at Grand Strand Community Church on Saturday to kickstart Myrtle Beach Bike Week "officially." The local community enjoys lending its support to the big event that is happening all week until May 22 and the bikers can't get enough of our southern hospitality and the bonding experience of being together. (wpde.com) (WBTW)
  3. The local nonprofit group, World for Ukraine, has received close to $1 million in medical supplies, clothing, personal care items and more. The goods are being sent to Ukraine's soldiers and civilians. One of the founders of the organization says the soldiers and civilians are fighting for their lives, and there are many ways to participate in getting more supplies to Ukraine. Fundraisers are one way, and there will be one at Tidal Creek Brewhouse on May 22 starting at 3 p.m. Volunteering with World For Ukraine is another great way to help. (WBTW)
  4. It's the height of the nesting season for sea turtles, and they've been spotted laying hundreds of eggs along Grand Strand beaches recently. Nesting season is about 15 days along, for the endangered reptiles. A nest of 167 eggs was discovered in South Litchfield and relocated to a safer location to hatch. Another 135 eggs were relocated from a nest in North Myrtle Beach on Sunday. S.C.U.T.E. keeps track of nest counts. Remember to keep away from nests, and if it's night time, douse your lights, including flashlights. Lights can scare momma turtles away, causing them to do what's called a "false crawl" where they come up onto the beach but do not lay eggs. (wpde.com)

Myrtle Beach pic of the day:

Monday's pic of the day was sent in by Wanda Cronrath who captured this nice shot of the colorful sky over the ocean while at the Sun Fun Festival recently. Thanks for the pretty picture, Wanda!

Today in Myrtle Beach:

  • Take A Kid Surfing Day/Surf Dreams Foundation Surf Contest @ Holiday Inn, Surfside (8 a.m.)
  • Southern Country Outlaws @ The DECK at House of Blues (1 p.m.)
  • Rally Kick Off Party @ Dagwood's in North Myrtle Beach (4 p.m.)
  • Spring Rally 2022 featuring The Burnin' Blue's Band @ Spokes & Bones Saloon (6 p.m.)
  • North Myrtle Beach City Council Meeting @ Council Chambers (7 p.m.)
  • Shakey Leggz @ Garden City Pier Café (8 p.m.)

From my notebook:

  1. On Saturday, the Booker T. Washington neighborhood of Myrtle Beach had a community event with Habitat For Humanity and Realty One. Residents were able to upgrade accessories on the outside of their property such as porch lights, street signs and mailboxes. The event was planned as part of a revitalization program. Afterwards, residents were treated to a community picnic. (wpde.com)
  2. North Myrtle Beach Fire Rescue: We respond to a wide variety of Public Assist calls that come in through Dispatch. Public Assist calls are any type of incident that requires the assistance of the Fire Dept but is not necessarily an emergency. Engine 1 and Truck 1 responded to the 400 block of 6th Ave South to provide a helping hand to a hard working individual who was in the process of doing some tree trimming when his lift lost power leaving him stranded a little over 15 feet up in the air! Thankfully this was a simple assist to allow him to continue on with this work with minimal delay. It wasn't a cat in a tree but that didn't stop A-Battalion crews from going to work! Great work guys! (Facebook)
  3. Thomas Real Estate is sponsoring a blood drive on May 31 at its office on Sea Mountain Highway in Cherry Grove. Those wishing to donate blood must make an appointment ahead of time at www.redcrossblood.org, and use the sponsor code THOMASREALESTATE. The event starts at 11 a.m. (Red Cross Calendar)
  4. Myrtle Beach Police Department: Memorial Day Weekend is quickly approaching! Keep these tips in mind when you plan your trip. Know before you go! (Facebook Watch video)
  5. The Horry-Georgetown March of Dimes happened on Saturday, and $64,000 was raised to help pregnant families in need and help babies get a positive start in life. This year's theme was "a mother of a movement." (wpde.com)
  6. The Town of Surfside Beach is serving as an overnight checkpoint stop for the Worrell 1000 Race tonight. The race is an offshore, long-distance beach catamaran sailboat race from Florida to Virginia Beach. The race is approximately 1,000 miles and there are overnight stops at various locations along the Atlantic seaboard. On May 17, the boats resume the race starting at 10 a.m. (Burbio) (WBTW)

That's it for Monday, everyone! I'll catch up with you bright and early Tuesday morning with another edition of the Myrtle Beach Daily.

Kathy Mandell

About me: The best decision I ever made was relocating to the Myrtle Beach area from New England a few years ago, with my three dogs and three cats. I enjoy dogs, cats, road trips, photography, writing, vegetarian food, live music, bicycling and above all my daily walks on the beaches in and around the Grand Strand.
