Happy Friday, people of the Grand Strand! Let's get this day started. Here's everything happening in Myrtle Beach today. Be very careful out there as we wait for Winter Storm Jasper to bring us some icy conditions, even here along the coast. Horry County schools canceled all in-person programs, and closed all school buildings for Friday. Stay safe, everybody!

Here are the top five stories today in Myrtle Beach:
- American Airlines, Southwest Airlines and United Airlines have all canceled flights to and from Myrtle Beach International Airport ahead of the winter storm expected in the area today and Saturday. As of the time of this posting, American Airlines canceled at least six flights, while United and Southwest canceled one each. Check with specific airlines for up-to-date flight cancelation information. (WMBF) (WBTW)
- The American Red Cross and New Directions of Horry County are bracing for winter weather and preparing their emergency shelters. Red Cross has several shelter trailers at the ready to set up on-the-spot if there is a need. New Directions' mens and womens shelters will both be open and they have extra bed mats and food available. (WBTW)
- Power failures are expected to happen Friday and Saturday during the winter weather. Officials urge everyone to be prepared ahead of time. If you lose power and happen to have a generator, only use it outdoors at a safe distance from your home. If power lines are down, stay away and report downed lines to your electric company. Have cell phones fully charged, use a battery-powered radio, and have enough medication, first-aid supplies, food, water, pet food, and baby supplies on hand for at least a day or two. Have extra blankets or sleeping bags handy in case you get chilly. (WPDE)
- First responders want you to know what to do if you or a loved one experience a medical emergency during icy weather. Mark Nugent, division chief for Midway Fire Rescue in Pawleys Island says the first thing to do is what you'd do any time: call 911. Stay off the roads particularly when conditions are icy — don't attempt to drive someone to the hospital. Emergency personnel are properly skilled and equipped to handle emergencies. Nugent also says plan ahead when it comes to medications, be sure your smoke detectors are functional, and make sure you stay safely indoors. (WMBF)
- North Myrtle Beach Fire Rescue: Ice Storm Warning will be in effect for our area until Saturday morning. As conditions on Friday will deteriorate throughout the day go ahead and finish any prep you may need to do early. Road conditions will become hazardous later in the day on Friday, especially after dark, and into Saturday as well. Continue to monitor our local weather partners for updates throughout the day. About me: The best decision I ever made was relocating to the Myrtle Beach area from New England a few years ago, with my three dogs and three cats. I enjoy dogs, cats, road trips, photography, writing, vegetarian food, live music, bicycling and above all my daily walks on the beaches in and around the Grand Strand.
