Here are the top five stories today in Myrtle Beach:

  1. Two resignations and one removal from the Myrtle Beach Planning Commission resulted in one-third of the commission members being replaced. There are nine volunteers who serve on the commission. Their duties consist of offering recommendations to city council on ordinances, rezoning requests and naming of streets. Commissioner Don Shanks resigned back in June. Commissioner Tom Robinson resigned last week because he is moving outside of Myrtle Beach and therefore will no longer be eligible to serve. One-time chairman Bill Pritchard was basically asked to resign, but with no obvious reason. Three new committee members were appointed last week to fill the vacancies. (WBTW)
  2. A new cooking reality show starring celebrity chef Amanda Freitag is coming to the Grand Strand. The city of Myrtle Beach along with a dozen area restaurants will be featured in the show called Chef Swap At The Beach. Chefs will be taken from their regular restaurant and swapped with another chef at a different restaurant, to prepare dishes that will be evaluated by a panel of judges. The six-episode show premieres October 1 on The Cooking Channel.(WMBF) (ChefSwap.com) (wpde.com)
  3. Georgetown County deputies worked tirelessly Saturday night and all day Sunday searching for and gathering information on reports of an abduction, only to find out that the report was a hoax. The sheriff's office said it responded to a call in the Kensington community about the apparent abduction of a juvenile. The department then spent many hours questioning neighbors, scouring the neighborhood, obtaining videos and reconstructing a crime scene. After uncovering several inconsistencies, the two juveniles who had reported the abduction recanted their statements and admitted to fabricating the story. It is not clear if the two juveniles will be charged. (WMBF)
  4. Myrtle Beach Police are urging residents and business owners who have surveillance cameras on their property to join the MBPD's C.A.P.T.U.R.E program. The Community Awareness Program Through Utilizing Residential Eyes is a database where people can register their camera with the PD allowing investigators to contact them to review camera footage. The program does not give officers access to your camera, it only shows them where a camera is located and what kind of camera is used. The department has recently been very successful using video surveillance footage to solve local crimes. About 100 people have enrolled in the program so far. A sign up link is contained in the article here. (WMBF)
  5. It was a long time coming, but the Landmark Resort's $3 million waterpark is now open. The H2oasis Waterpark takes up nearly 10,000 square feet adjacent to the popular family resort. There are several different water slides and play options within the water. A jungle-themed play zone featuring parrots and a waterfall mushroom fountain round out the setup. The waterpark will be open this year until October 23 and then will reopen for the 2023 season in the spring. (wpde.com)

Myrtle Beach pic of the day:

Here's another beautiful photo from reader Judy Banas who snapped this pic she describes as cotton candy sky over Doolittle Lake near Market Common. Thanks for the pretty picture, Judy!

Kathy Mandell

About me: The best decision I ever made was relocating to the Myrtle Beach area from New England a few years ago, with my three dogs and three cats. I enjoy dogs, cats, road trips, photography, writing, vegetarian food, live music, bicycling and above all my daily walks on the beaches in and around the Grand Strand.
