Here are the top five stories in Myrtle Beach today:

  1. Are you wondering how to support Ukraine in Myrtle Beach? The MB Chamber of Commerce has put together a list of local businesses and organizations that are raising money for Ukraine. Tidal Creek Brewhouse held an event on Sunday and RipTydz is hosting a cornhole tournament Saturday, March 26 to raise funds for Ukraine. A local steel distributor, Metglas, is also doing fundraising to help with self-defense and medical items in care packages going to Ukraine. (wpde.com) (MyrtleBeachChamber.com)
  2. An update/correction on a story reported on last week: the Good Day Café is closing temporarily so the owner can recover from that hit-and-run crash that left him seriously injured. Owner Kevin Andrews says he will be on the mend after a short break, and intends to open back up again as soon as possible. The incident happened right after Andrews finished serving hundreds of free Christmas meals to the community, and police have not located the driver. The eatery had a Beatles-themed "Hello, Goodbye" party on Saturday, and are donating all proceeds from that event to a Guillain-Barre Syndrome charity. (WMBF)
  3. Saturday, March 26, Market Common is hosting its first Family SPRING Fest. The event will take place on Deville Street, and it's free. There will be a petting zoo, a giant slide, bounce house, crafts, face painting, balloon art, and so much more. The fun starts at 11:00 a.m. (Myrtle Beach Patch)
  4. Practicing all year has paid off for Myrtle Beach High School's NJROTC. The Myrtle Beach Navy NJROTC team is one of 24 schools that qualified for the navy national drill academics and athletics meet. The program gives students a chance to learn about military service and personal responsibility. (wpde.com)
  5. Georgetown's City Council passed its first reading of a proposed ordinance that would make tethering an animal with a rope or chain outdoors against the law. The city has always had an animal cruelty ordinance. When a Georgetown citizen collected signatures on a petition and presented the proposal to Council, it was quick to support adding the additional feature to the ordinance. Mayor Carol Jayroe says she believes the council will pass the second reading next month. (WMBF)

  • All aboard! Who's up for a little history about the railroad that used to be in our area? This article has the scoop about the Conway & Sea Shore Railroad. It began in 1900 and was the first train that connected the two cities. Did you know, Myrtle Beach was called New Town at that time? It was no easy feat to take the train out of Conway because you first had to take a ferry across the Waccamaw River in order to board the train! But wait, it gets better — one of the first sensations to attract people to the beachside community was a beached whale. (MyHorryNews.com)
  • Road trip! The folks at Only In Your State came up with this family-friendly trip along the SC coast, featuring at least two Grand Strand attractions. Check it out! (OnlyInYourState.com)

You're all set to start of a new week, folks! I'll be back in your inbox Tuesday with a new edition of the Myrtle Beach Daily.

Kathy Mandell

About me: The best decision I ever made was relocating to the Myrtle Beach area from New England a few years ago, with my three dogs and three cats. I enjoy dogs, cats, road trips, photography, writing, vegetarian food, live music, bicycling and above all my daily walks on the beaches in and around the Grand Strand.
