Here are the top five stories today in Myrtle Beach:

  1. Home sales were down about 20 percent in Myrtle Beach and Carolina Forest in June, as compared to a year ago. In North Myrtle Beach, home sales went down 34%. The downward trend began in the spring and is attributed mainly to low inventory, higher home prices and of course increased interest rates. Experts say they are seeing a market correction that should favor buyers using home loans vs. cash buyers. (WBTW)
  2. Myrtle Beach International Airport is expecting to break records again for the 2022 fiscal year. In 2019, the airport's best year on record, MYR saw over 2.5 million travelers arriving and departing. Officials are expecting to see about a 24% increase for 2022 as the Grand Strand grows more and more popular as a vacation destination. (wpde.com)
  3. A Grand Strand teenager who was seriously injured in a motorcycle crash on Halloween night 2021 is celebrating his recovery. Max Strader lost part of his lower left leg, which has been replaced with a prosthetic. Strader took a victory lap at Grand Strand Medical Center and says he used humor to get him through the lengthy recovery process. (wpde.com) (Myhorrynews)
  4. A pandemic project led two Pawleys Island college students to launch a brand to spread positivity, unite people and help people be happy and live their lives to the fullest. Connor and Ella Fata started XL-Ant Life with t-shirts and hats, but now the project has grown into something bigger. They are hoping to take their brand into local stores on the Grand Strand. The name is a play on words and an inside joke in their family. It stands for "excellent life." The company's logo features an ant. (WBTW)
  5. Horry County elementary school student, Colin Flanagan, received a certificate of appreciation this week from Horry County Fire Rescue. The special award was given to him for a fire preparedness project he worked on for the Horry County Technology Fair. It demonstrated what could potentially happen during a fire and showed how a closed door can help block smoke. Colin based his research on the "Close Before You Doze" fire safety campaign. These gorgeous sunrise and sunset photos make my day every morning when I read my email! Today's morning sunrise pic is from Shani Luccketti, who got this shot from Veteran's Pier on the Murrells Inlet MarshWalk. Nice one, Shani!

From my notebook:

  • Free screenings of the documentary "Our Vanishing Americana - A South Carolina Portrait" are happening around the Grand Strand this weekend. The film features local Myrtle Beach businesses as filmmaker Mike Lassiter makes his way across SC to showcase family-owned businesses. The film will be broadcast on SCETV in August. (SCETV.org)
  • St. Francis Animal Care Center in Georgetown has gone over capacity and has had to turn away owner-surrendered dogs. An influx of dogs to the shelter for various reasons caused the facility to exceed its capacity. It is currently only accepting dogs brought in by animal control officers. The shelter has tried to help people keep their pets by offering food or medical care. As with almost all the shelters in the Grand Strand, it is operating over budget and is short-staffed. St. Francis has found homes for 20 of the 50 dogs it wanted to adopt out during the Pick Me! SC free statewide adoption campaign. (wpde.com)
  • The Humane Society of North Myrtle Beach: Feeling crafty? Have old t-shirts or material that you don't need? Use this pattern to make toys for shelter dogs! (The Humane Society of North Myrtle Beach via Facebook)
  • The Myrtle Beach Fire Department is seeking Certified Firefighter EMTs and paramedics. The department is accepting applications through July 22. Contact Deputy Fire Marshal Capt. Jonathan Evans for more info: jwevans@cityofmyrtlebeach.com or (843) 918-1221. (City of Myrtle Beach)
  • Crown Reef Beach Resort and Water park has revealed its new luxury four-bedroom penthouse. The 3,800 square-foot suite is described as upscale with sweeping views of the ocean. A full kitchen, washer and dryer, a soaking tub,and tons of other amenities are included. Prices are not shown on the resort website. (CrownReef.com)
  • Surfside Beach's continued growth caused officials to limit the number of parking spaces in the downtown area along Surfside Drive and Ocean Boulevard. The busy summer season has shown how big the town's parking problem is — it's become a huge issue for residents, visitors, business owners and their employees. The town's parking committee is working on solutions and welcomes feedback and suggestions. (WMBF)

Kathy Mandell

About me: The best decision I ever made was relocating to the Myrtle Beach area from New England a few years ago, with my three dogs and three cats. I enjoy dogs, cats, road trips, photography, writing, vegetarian food, live music, bicycling and above all my daily walks on the beaches in and around the Grand Strand.
